Purchase a watch you don’t want to get on waitlist
Which watch have you guys purchased to just develop a relationship with an AD to get a hot model? Eg Pepsi, hulk, Daytona
Just curious if there is an arbitrage opportunity: Gray has Hulk for 16k for example A) buy a non-hot model from AD for some amount, sell it at a loss of 2k B) get a hot model from AD at retail So technically just pay a 2k premium (for example) instead of supporting grays. Obviously the maximum loss I would want to take is the difference in price from gray prices and retail price Anyway, what are some good candidates for models I can purchase (that is good enough for me to get on a list) but still have some resale value that would limit my loss? |

Never purchased anything I didn’t want.
Otherwise what’s the point. I was lucky to pick up watches like the LVc at a discount way back before the green sub was popular. Same with the Pepsi GMT and blue sub. I haven’t had to wait long for others. The only one is the steel Daytona. The wait is part of the fun. |

If the math adds up and he will sell you the "hot model" at the same time, I could see myself doing it.

Probably best to check with your AD but I'd presume it's the least desirable or most expensive models that are hard to shift.
Complete madness to take on that risk considering they have no obligation to follow up after. |

I don’t think many people would purchase a watch they don’t want just to get closer to getting another watch. A bundle I could see

I don’t think this method is as easy at it seems. There is also the time factor of waiting. I would honestly just go grey here if you want it that much. What you pay in price you safe in time and hassle.

Absolutely will never do that. I'm not begging and/or bribing an AD for the right to give them my money for their watch. Ridiculous

Building a relationship with an AD is accomplished through purchase history and time. I see a lot of younger collectors attempt to do this and while it can be done, it will take forever unless you are spending hundreds of thousands dollars. You are late to the game and more than likely will never catch up in the next decade or until the watch market changes. Go look at other brands that make great watches and can be sourced. Cut your teeth there and learn. The watch game can be played with other brands other than Rolex or PP. Just educate yourself and go buy some cool watches. Omega and Seiko are two that I enjoy and I can typically find what I want at a discount and I enjoy wearing the watches.

I still don’t understand the mindset of not wanting to support the “terrible grey” dealer and trying to support the “righteous AD”. They are all in it for one thing, your money. Who cares where you buy it from. Pay the least amount and enjoy the damn possession.

Surely there must be other timepieces you desire? Perhaps a Cartier for the wife? And OMEGA Speedmaster is a great choice. Maybe you love auto racing, and so a Heuer Monaco is a great choice.
There's far more to life than just Rolex.

I could never buy something I don’t want and that scenario has never been presented to me while purchasing 10 Rolex watches since 1979. That seems crazy to me...no offense intended.
I recently bought a brand new Sub Bluesy through Chrono 24 and I could not be happier!

Stupidest thing to do.
Instead of buying something you dont want just pay the premium then. You probably will save money. Some people's logic and thinking makes ZERO sense. I hope you guys dont run your daily lives thinking like this. |

Just to get on a “waitlist”?
Odds are you may never get the call for what you want and you have thrown away your money. If someone does this, ask the sales associate since I cannot see my own forehead, do I have the word “stupid” written on my forehead? |

ADs are very well aware of the gap between MSRP and Market Price. Until they’ve arbitraged YOU for that difference, over time or in a bundle, you’re not getting a hype piece at retail. If you’re a watch lover in it for the journey then build that relationship, if you just want the hype watch go grey. You’re not going to arbitrage the people who do it for a living.

Don't worry about purchasing other watches. Quite frankly, you drop $50k on a non-popular Day Date combo and you probably still won't get the LVc as a reward. Buy a Date Just 41, they're really really nice watches if you don't want to play the waiting game. Or just purchase a Submariner LN, LVc is very nice, but been extremely hyped lately for a watch that is very green for lack of better description.

You could buy the unwanted watch, but there is still no guarantee you will get the watch you really want. Seems like there is always somebody spending more money than you at these ADs.

Why?
There are a lot of things in life that I want but can't get. Whether it's because what I want isn't available, is more than I'm willing to pay or is more than I can afford to pay. There are a lot of watches that I want that I can afford and that are available, so, why buy things that I don't want in order to make something else more attainable. Plus, selling watches isn't necessarily always an easy proposition. |
