Every type of green Rolex dial

Rolex doesn't typically make very many green dials. Here's my attempt to showcase all of them. If I've forgotten any, please let me know!

The earliest examples of green Rolex dials are these green enamel beauties:

Then came the many shades of green Stella dials. Collectors often note that due to inevitable differences in paint/aging, each Stella dial's color is unique. While that does seem to be true, I'll try to break down the colors as coherently as I can. Some 4-digit Day-Dates have very bright green dials:

But most green Stella 1803 models, with and without diamonds, have a fairly "true" green that I'll call "shamrock green":

Yellow gold 5-digit green Stella Day-Dates appear to have a slightly darker, more "forest green" color, and the dial text is now gold instead of black. Some have the small Roman numeral minute track instead of the older hash mark style. Some have diamonds and/or the Khanjar crest representing the Sultanate of Oman:

White gold 5-digit green Stella Day-Dates tend to have a "grass-stain green" hue with gold text, or a rich "emerald green" with white text:

Can't forget the ladies' Stellas:

The vintage green vignette (a.k.a. "dégradé") Day-Date dials are stunning. As of 2019, it's once again an option on the Day-Date 36, but Rolex calls it "ombré":

Now for stone dials. Malachite dials exist for 3 sizes of Datejust as well as the 36mm Day-Date:

Bloodstone dials exist for Day-Dates with Romans, diamonds, and nothing for hour markers. A bloodstone Datejust was made too:

Misc. stone dials:

These are the two green non-stone dials that came on the 118___ Day-Date:

The Day-Date 40 has olive options in rose gold and white gold:

The Oyster Perpetual line has olive options in 26mm and 34mm sizes:

You can find olive Pearlmaster 34's and 39's as well:

And here are the Datejust 31's olive options:

Three non-stone green dials have been offered for 36mm Datejusts:

Three modern sports models have been blessed with green dials:

And lastly, the new mint dial on the Datejust 28 looks pretty interesting:

Thanks Rob, for yet another great compilation!

I’d guess that there are only intended to be three different (original, non-sunburst) Stella green colors (true/darker green, pastel/mint green, and the pale blue-green/turquoise), and the other differences are just among paint batches, aging, and/or photo lighting.

This truly is nothing more than a guess — I’ve only ever seen one page apparently from Rolex which listed Stella colors, and it was obviously incomplete.

Looks like they made a green dial in 1925, actually. Antiquorum calls the dial on this purse watch a "green lacquer" dial:

Icon7 Rolex 1803 Green Dial (Degrade/Vignette).

Hello everyone - new member here. --- Thank you, Rob, for this post. Thanks also to several others on vintage day-dates, especially 1803 and 18038 ref., which I have sadly, become rather manically attracted to these days.

On the subject of green dials, I wonder if the one featured in the Chrono24 listing images attached is a an original degrade/vignette from 1969 (as a new member I cannot post links, and am hence attaching images of the listing)

Or Google search "chrono24. com rolex 1803-rolex-day-date-green-dial--id15756324" --- listing ID is 15756324

.... I ask because I am not sure if it is factory original 1969 green degrade/vignette dial or refinished. I do like it though, and thought it might be a good addition to my fledgeling Rolex collection, hence.

Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I don’t know if it’s an original dial or not, but it is certainly not a vignette/degradée dial. Those fade to black around the edges, like below, and I believe they were only ever offered with diamond markers.

Hi Clay, thanks for your reply and PM.

Since the listing (image attached) states the sale comes with a box and original papers at time of sale, I think I will contact the seller and ask them to share with me a copy of the warranty at time of purchase. The box, of course, is non-original from the first image in the listing - I think it's a late 80s-90s Submariner or Daytona box (also used for an 18233).

If the listing's 1803 certificate is original and says anything about a 1803 with a green dial, then I think that should be as clinching evidence as one can get from a 50 year old Rolex.

I don't see any tritium on the dial as best I can tell with my admittedly rather limited knowledge. The lume-plots are there though. Tritium has a half-life of not more than 20 years, so it should have long worn off by now, perhaps even with a relume.

Several sellers do list anything Green as "Stella", though Stella (ceramic dials) proper only came around early 70s after the hackset mechanism was introduced with the 1556 movement in 1972 to the best of my knowledge (I am open to correction on this if some early 70 brochures show otherwise). Then again, no two Stellas are the same in color, depth, or transparency, since they were all apparently each handmade; so if factory original Green, this 1969 dial may in fact be a "proto-Stella" of sort. Perhaps an experienced and venerable Rolex AD specializing in vintage Day-Dates can help with this.

Regarding the diamonds: I remember reading a while back on another (brilliant) thread from a gentleman from Australia (I think it may have been David), who detailed all the diamond bezels, including diamond counts and hallmarks - how 1804 was the only bezel in white gold that came factory installed with 46 diamonds, with the ADs custom adding a white 46 diamond Rolex bezel on to YG 1803s at time of purchase - and how YG factory diamonds were allowed to be added on by ADs when 18038 ref came out with 44 diamonds around 1977-78. This information is also available in a Google Books document online - not sure if it's the same author with a nom-de-plume from Australia, since it reads verbatim to the TRF 1803 diamond bezel post(s).

This Chrono24 1803 Green dial listing also states the seller will include a YG band along with the lizard skin original Rolex strap shown. Hopefully it is 18k as well. If it has SS springbars common to the time are (there no pinholes on the lugs), then I'll have to get a new 18k or 14k YG springbar (rare part, I believe) to prevent damage/stretch to the hole where the springbar shoulders go.

So much customization appears to have been done back then, with some YG bands carrying the Swiss hallmarks in the (hidden) clasp, aside from 750 stamp (for 18k) and others (from 1971) not, along with some really high quality YG bands made in Japan and a few of slightly lesser quality from Latin America (due to gold import restrictions), that I have to be careful when making a purchase.

There is another (Rolex serviced) listing though (attached below) of a 1803 vignette/degrade without diamonds, which matches up almost perfectly to the Chrono24 listing in green except it's in wine red. Unfortunately, it's sold.

But, you're right - the Green one in the Chrono24 listing doesn't have the degrade/vignette black fade near the circumference the red one does. -- I suppose the warranty papers will be the only way to decide.

Thanks for your valuable inputs. Kind regards.

I believe that looks like a custom green dial on the 1803 you saw on Chrono24.

The better question for the seller is if that is an original dial. His description is silent on that point - which is usually a hint it is custom.

Let’s see what the papers state.

New green dials from 2020 include 3 sizes of the OP:

And they're calling this DJ31's dial "mint green" although this is different than the seafoamy green I've sometimes seen called "mint" in the past:

This dial colour (mint green from the 31mm DJ) on a 36-41mm OP/DJ would be killer

Only with romans and diamonds - which is a bit blingy

I suppose what I really wanted is the old olive OP34 put into the OP39 which would have been an instant purchase but clearly that’s not happening now!
