What is a Whale?

I have a question for everyone? Pardon my ignorance but everyone refers to some people as whale's here? What is that exactly beyond the animal that is in the ocean LOL.

Big spenders. Walk in and buy a DD40 for yourself and solid gold DJ on president for the wife. You'll get any SS you want.

Guys where money is no object. Easily can part with six figures a year on watches and/or jewelry depending on the authorized dealer. Due to their extremely crazy purchase history - they're called first for any of the hot models since they bring a lot of revenue to the store. And most of the time, they will always jump over you on the "list" if they want something you've been waiting for.

Yep, that's why the Pepsi and Daytona are priced at just about what you'll lose buying and selling PM to get SS at MSRP.

I remember way back the term was around gambling, and the whales were the people Vegas casinos brought in from Saudi Arabia etc and comped everything so they would spend massive sums at the tables. Generally it had something to do with oil proceeds.

There were very few people at the time that had that kind of money to throw around.

Then tech gazillionaires, and Russian Oligarchs, and movie and music producers, delusional rappers and athletes qualified.

Although now like the term supermodel (who is anyone who once did a Sears catalog shoot), it now means anyone with a twenty grand limit on their credit card and a leased Merc.

Why do you use “delusional “ as a qualifier for rappers?

I think you could say “successful “ rappers, or “hard working” rappers.

Possibly referring to the fact that most musical acts and athletes are flashes in the pan who become rich for a short time but not wealthy. To be a true whale I’d think you need to actually be wealthy, ie substantial revenue streams regardless of your occupation.

Not really meant to be all that derogatory and it wasn’t a qualifier for rappers. It was a description of delusional rappers/artists that thought all this money coming in is going to continue and they’re out on the prowl.

Fact is, most are irrelevant in a few years and the money is gone. The smart ones go on to producing other acts and can keep it going. Most don’t.

And being rich doesn’t make you a whale, being in the scene makes you a whale. Being a player makes you a whale. I doubt you’d call Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, etc a whale. They are rich, beyond imagination but they don’t choose to be “players”.

Lots of sports stars are fabulously wealthy and are family men and or “quiet” and don’t partake in the “action”. Probably not what anyone would call a whale.

Even if i had the monies like Gates or Buffet or even multimillions at my disposal, as much as i like watches, i couldn't justify spending it all on them. I feel there is so much we can do with money and empower others than just padding our pockets always with material items. So much good to do for others...i am not judging anyone who wants to buy nice time pieces as I really like a nice watch too :)

Bingo! A whale is someone who is happily willing (and able) to frequently risk or part with significantly larger sums of money than the average customer/patron. Businesses will tend to bend over backwards to these repeat customers, whether casino, luxury retailers, restaurants, etc.
