I was happy to salvage this T19, since it was very bad when I received the watch.

Not sure what you mean by “prefer it”. Prefer it over what? These watches came with these crystals (or, at least ones just like them).

Prefer them to the flat crystal .
Why did they come with the dome

To clarify, I think your question is "Why did these Sea Dwellers come from the factory with a domed crystal, rather than the flat Top-Hat cyclops crystal found on Submariners, which similarly have a date complication?"

Answer: It's Rolex. They do what the f they want. And, technically, for strength in deeper water, as Sea Dwellers have a much higher depth rating than Subs.

We all know the engineering basic that an arch/dome is much stronger to pressure than a flat surface. Hence the shape of submarines, diving bells and those old-school copper/brass diving helmets. And bridge arches. The list goes on (which is something people say only when they can't think of any more examples ).

But the OP posted a picture of his 5512 (which, with no date complication, wouldn’t have a cyclops anyway). I think he means...and please correct me if I’m wrong, OP...domed plexiglass crystals as opposed to flat sapphire crystals.

Exactly why does my Grandpa's sub have one

All interesting questions.

Maybe Rolex decided at some point that a flat cyclops crystal was strong enough for the 660 ft depth rating of a Submariner but not for the 2,000 ft depth rating of a Sea Dweller.

I think they're just design differences over time. The most modern Sea Dweller comes with a flat sapphire cyclops crystal...

Your grandpa’s Sub (I'm guessing that’s his 5512 you posted) was made from 1959 to 1978. In that time Rolex didn’t use sapphire crystals for their Subs. They used domed plexiglass. Sapphire crystals for no-date Subs came later on.

Well, you knew it was the only "service" item on your beauty!
