Slate Dials and the disappearance of Rhodium.

So messing around with the configurator tool and I noticed that Rhodium dials no longer seem to be listed, and in their place “Slate”. Are these actually different, or did Rolex get sick of people wondering if the rhodium dials were actually Rhodium, and just rename them?

The YM40 rhodium dial is actually rhodium plated apparently.

OP is correct; Rhodium no longer offered on Rolex configurator; now known as Slate.

Love the last pic. Where did you order that grey alligator strap?

Thanks - my favourite piece.

I'm not sure why they have renamed it. Seems strange if the dial is actually precious metal not to mention it?

I don't remember; I've had it a long time and it resurfaced when I was trying to find a strap for the watch. Thanks!!

Thank you so much. It's funny, but when I spend ages setting up a macro shot with a DSLR like this one and then post to Instagram they get about a third of the likes of quick wrist shots with a smartphone...! Glad people of here like the ones like this too.

Precisely, it’d be all over the ad copy if it was. Also it’d be more expensive. It’s just like how a car colours bares no relation to the composition of the paint. It’s popped up a few times here alone....

The dial on the DJ36 honestly looks darker to me, but it wouldn’t surprise me to learn to was the exact same image as before.

Thanks - interesting stuff. I was told the dial contained rhodium. This review also states that the dial is plated in actual rhodium (also has the best photos of the YM ever taken!)

Yeah the Yachtmaster no longer lists it as Rhodium, it's Slate there too.

I think they are disappearing. Take a look at a 16200 or a 116200 rhodium roman DJ and you will see it is not as dark as slate, nor as dark as the YM posted above. I think rhodium in those watches is a much more even match with the stainless steel of the watch, and is just the right shade for an all "stainless" look. Even the "silver" bar marker dials for the above references are a bit too light to give that perfect match look. Granted, this is just IMO but it does make me a bit sad to not be able to find this look in a more modern or newer generation Rolex.

Hi all – this is a very old post, but I was just looking up slate versus rhodium dials to see if anything new had been posted. I bought YM40 slate dial right when it changed names (along with other dial name changes at that same time) and became focused on figuring out if it was just a name change or not. At the time I noticed that the pictures hadn’t changed between when they were called rhodium, and when they were called slate. I then asked the official Rolex repair location about the dials and they said that when they need to swap out a dial, it is the exact same internal reference number between slate and rhodium, and that it was just a name change. Not sure if anyone has seen anything else on this since it’s been quite some time… the reason I am interested again is that I saw another older YM40 and the dial seemed darker. I didn’t have mine on unfortunately so could not compare…. Anyone know more?

I believe for the Datejust it was a name change only. The dial is exactly the same and the reference number did not change.

Rhodium dials are not precious metal just grey coloured paint on a brass dial.

Slate and Rhodium two totally different dials and color shades. At AD yesterday rhodium will be and is mostly gone and slate will take over, had a ladies 34 DJ Rhodium and a DJ41 slate side by side and in my opinion slate MUCH more classy and sharp.
