Platona for 2 Daytona’s and a Pepsi

Hey guys hope everyone is well: I have a few watches . 116518LN Paul Newman ,116519LN and a new Pepsi 2020 which I do love . But I also love the diamond baguette dial platona.

Would it be stupid if I swapped my 3 watches for platona ?

Also is the platona discreet? And fly under the radar?

I know it’s quite robust and can handle my lifestyle.

Would appreciate anyone else’s opinion , I’ve never tried a platona on either but I do like a heavy watch. I’ve tried platinum day date .

Most would probably opt NOT for trading 3 watches for one. BUT if that diamond Daytona is your one all and be all then go for it. This hobby has and likely never will be for the rational-minded :)

Only you know the answer. Do you want one super special piece or a selection of watches. I often wonder the same thing. Should a sell all my watches for one very special watch and wear that daily till I die? Honestly I find rotating watches a bit of a pain since I usually just grab the JC and wear that.

I would trade the 2 daytonas, keep the pepsi and pony up the extra cash if needed. Platona and pepsi would be a great duo

This sums it up. I'd much much rather owning those three amazing watches, but if you're heart is set on the pt daytona, go for it!

I would get bored of just one watch no matter how special it is. It’s a no for me.

I would never do that. I almost considered a similar deal. I would have regreted it so much. I enjoy my different watches.

There are two factors in this:

I would not effectively trade 3 watches for 1 especially with one being the exact same watch just made in a more "valuable" material.

However, if it is your absolute grail piece (and the values are market), I do understand and I say do it as the end probably justify the means. It depends on what you want your overall collection budget to be or how it is divided up.

...

Put it this way, my ultimate modern grail is the 5712A. As I like to keep my collection small anyways, if I could trade all of my watches to get my grail, I would most certainly do it. I can add if it was at MSRP, but if it is current grey market values I would have to sacrifice my other pieces(but even then so, its out of my internal watch budget). But the market is the market so if I had a similar swapping opportunity or had the equivalent value in watches to swap, hell yeah I would get my grail.

That’s a tough one with four really great watches in play. The Platona is a very special watch though, even more so with The baguettes. If that’s your grail and you know you can’t get it at MSRP from your AD or that you won’t come out of pocket for it from a grey then why not?

If it were me, I would either do the deal as-is or keep the 116518 for contrast and come out of pocket for the difference. You can also hedge your bets and get back on the list for the pieces you move. By the time your name comes back up you’ll likely be ready buy any you miss or know you are set with your Platona.

if you bought the platona, would you even wear the other two daytonas? if you think the answer is no, then trade them.

I wouldn't do the trade. I like the variety in my collection. Just save up some of those Tesla/BTC gains and slap down for the Platona!!

Full disclosure - I should be receiving my Platona very shortly, in that combination and its breathtaking.

probably about right considering the dollars. Only you can decide what you love the most. I had a 116519 that I sold off to pay for a "grail" watch last year. The grail has worn off and I miss my 116519. But, hey a platona is another level. Let us know what you do.

That’s pretty well summed up for me

Caveat emptor, the problem with trading for “be all - end all watches is that they tend to be a moving target

Some people are happy owning just one good watch.

Some people enjoy having multiple watches to mix and match.

Which one are you? given you have both the yellow gold and white gold oysterflex models of daytona, I assume you are the second type.

You might not be happy going from 3 to 1.

If it were me, I would keep the pepsi, and trade the two lesser daytonas (lesser only relative to the platona) for the platona.

I have those same two Daytona's (116508 and 116519) along with others that I could theoretically do a similar flip and I also love the Paltona and I have not made the flip. I have considered similar flips but have not. I especially can't lose that YG 116508. My fav watch in my collection.

I think you misread, OP says he has two OF Daytonas, one of which he calls a Paul Newman for reasons of his own...

Cheers

Guys really appreciate all your comments: I’m undecided . I was a one watch man for past 10 years but recently bought two Daytona’s and Pepsi at mrsp over Past 18 months. Now I want the baguette dial platinum Daytona. But to be honest I may just keep the 3. It’s a good collection. I’d rather swap them for a Ferrari California 2017 model and add cash haha

I say go for it if you can. Yes the Daytona is discreet except to those who know what it is which just isn't the general population!!!

Get the one Daytona you love - life is too short and rotating two Daytonas doesn't sound efficient. I would also save the Pepsi.

Continuing that behavior with the platona will cost you a used cayman though. You better love love love it! It isn't SS and won't flip for your purchase price so easy.

Love the Platona but it's a no for me. Variety is the spice of life.
