Nice from a delayed gratification standpoint, otherwise it's horseshit.

Was at an AD yesterday picking up my Grand Seiko and they have literally 50% of the store dedicated to Rolex display cases as well as a private viewing room and everything was nearly empty! The only Rolex’s on display were a few tiny ladies watches and a solid gold Skydweller.

I’m honestly wondering how long AD’s will be okay with giving up so much floor space to a product they can’t sell to walk in clients. Of course they are selling every Rolex that comes in their back door but why even bother with display cases at this point?

Gotta love the chase I say!
If you're asking if I enjoy having to pay 3-5k over retail price because I may not necessarily be a preferred client then the answer is no.

I like the Rolex watch itself. The purchasing is just a ends to a mean. Exclusively and rarity doesn’t interest me at all. The MSRP is exclusive enough.

Am I the only one?

It wasn’t that long ago when you could walk in to an AD, try on and leave with the watch of your dreams. Those were good times.

Today’s “chase”?

If you're willing to spend thousands on what for 99.9% of the population is a completely superflous and unnecessary item in this day and age such as a watch, why the hell would you enjoy having to essentially beg for that item as has become commonplace with ADs? Or keep being told to spend a little more? Or purchase or bundle other watches you don't want?

And all of this to MAYBE get the watch you want?

You enjoy this? Really?

Calm down. I’m betting you don’t have many of the models you want with a reply such as this one

You’re right. This guy has it all wrong. We’re buying luxury items - money talks. Get over it. If you don’t like it, buy a seiko (cue the abuse)

If this is the attitude, then you're into it for the exclusivity, not the watches. Now, I will concede that it's possible to be into both, and that may be you. But the point that you are making is why there are so many people that could give two sh*ts about watches, buying Rolex, just like an my other asset class. For those of us that like the watches exclusively, this modern Rolex environment is a huge turn off. I will not kiss an AD's ass to get a watch, or buy 3 watches I don't want to get one I do, or pay a premium to buy a watch that's still in production. It's completely turned me off of Rolex. Rolex wont care that I'm gone, cuz there's plenty of other money hungry chaps willing to take my place in their market in order to have the honor of buying one of their watches at retail. But for me, the juice isn't worth the squeeze to play their game.
And no, I'm not on any lists. If I was offered a watch at retail, yeah I'd probably buy it, hold it and sell it. Not cuz I enjoy the chase or because I like what the rolex market has become, but because I still believe in capitilism, and I'm not stupid. Just like I'm not stupid enough to pay above retail. But I'm sure someone else will.

might be the case for new collectors, for those of us who used to buy on secondary market with good discount off MSRP, the current situation is pretty frustrating because you can’t find any good deals.

I only like that the restricted supply allows me to feel more comfortable that I could sell for what I paid if really tough times hit. Since I have no plans to sell, that’s not much of a plus.

If it means the youngsters can't get a watch for their achievements ,occasions, special moments then i feel saddened.
Without the youngsters there is no future!

I like the thrill of the chase. But I could buy 2x as many watches before this craziness started.

I want one of the new 41mm Submariners. I think the fact I can't easily go to my AD and purchase it at retail makes me want it that much more. But I don't want it so bad to pay 6k over retail for an 8K watch. I have an excellent purchase history with my AD and have been promised one once it is available. I guess that will be when the gray market prices start to come down if that is going to ever occur. Still waiting.

No I would much rather just drive up to my AD buy the watch I want without having to hunt for it. Could of saved me thousands. I’m not getting any younger I don’t like games. Time is money

With vintage, rare, limited edition, and sold-out pieces, I love the thrill of the chase.

With current, standard production models, the chase is an annoyance rather than thrilling because it's artificially constructed and unnecessary. I never actually engaged in it, though, because the only time I ever bought a brand new Rolex was a few months ago, and there was no wait to get it from an AD (it was an 126660 James Cameron DSSD).

I don't care for any gamesmanship.
Would rather just have the stupid watch available for purchase.

Love it ! Makes all those diamonds and watches I bought before extra worth it now. Although I do have family in the jewelry business I still maintain reputation with a few AD's
