Has anyone ever successfully back out of an auction for a watch that they won?

I'll bite.
Having extensive auction experience, I'll say this. If a person is trying to back out of an auction they voluntarily bid on, they should be completely ashamed of themselves. Either you didn't do your due diligence before the auction, or you were careless or impulsive, or you just should not have bid. However, if you did bid. Honor your bid, then resell later. It's your mistake, own it.

When you sign paperwork you will be in a legal binding contract. Call the auction and see if they have a 10-30% cancellation fee.

I have not. All auctions have stated rules. You will mostly likely banned from partaking in any future auctions for a stated length of time or could be permanently.

i used to have a fair amount of auctions with other valuable collectibles. Non Paying Bidders were the worst. The item is devalued in perception the minute it get relisted even though it was the buyer's fault.

The few buyers that have done that with me on EBAY have been reported as non paying bidders with is a violation of their agreement.

Unless they are habitual offenders, that really does not do anything.
And I think that it would have to be quite frequent.

When ebay implemented global shipping, I had buyers backing out right and left.

Highly doubt you'll find anyone here that will agree with this type of behavior?

I mean you signed on this forum and your first post is to try to beat an auction, I'm confused.....

Welcome

In my heyday, I was going to about 5 auctions a week. And I would agree with this statement for the most part.

The caveat being, if you are buying from a watch auction or watch dealer that is on line, and they are describing the watch as original dial, original hands, original etc., and you receive the watch and that information is incorrect.

The condition is objective, I would not include that. As long as the photos are not doctored, as some auction houses have done. (I am picturing vintage watches.)

If they are a general auction, or ebay seller , they will not have the knowledge to determine authenticity and I would bid accordingly. I assume everyone else is in the same boat as I am.

Buying something at a discount because it's authenticity or amount of being original is questionable (and is not described by the seller), with the thought that you can return it if it does not turn out to be the bargain you thought it was, is just wrong.

If you are talking about not paying, for an item that you won the bid on, again, just wrong. And if I were the auction house or dealer, I would not sell to you again. (I have a list of band ebay buyers.)

It flags them as a non paying bidder.

Sellers can exclude non paying bidders from bidding and if you get enough strikes EBAY will suspend your account

What I question is how many strikes does it take?
eBay won't spell that out.
I have the impression if you buy 100 items and don't pay for 20, they are not going to kick you off. They are still making money from that buyer.

I talked to my friend that sales 100-200 items a week.
He says his non-payment rate has been about 5%.
Mostly auctions and with international buyers.
I don't think they see the duties until after they purchase the item, and then back out.

I’m actually registered for the Phillips auction next week. I don’t plan on bidding on anything.

I thought this was a cool video:
