New Maki-e for the collection
Jar really likes the Izumo Platinum pens and has several so when one came up recently for sale I thought I would give it a try.
Izumo Honurushi Raden Aurora with a Broad nib. A little more information courtesy Andy's Pens. Izumo-no-kuni is an area known for its production of high quality “washi (Japanese paper)” and so writing has been appreciated by the local people. Shunichi Nakata, founder of Platinum Pen, christened the new brand name of “Izumo” in 2010 with the cooperation of officials from Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. This was to acknowledge the founder of the company’s birthplace. Professional craftsmanship can be found throughout the “Izumo series,” which continues to be made from carefully selected materials. The brand has also been designated as one of the “Izumo brands” recognized by Izumo City. Aizu maki-e is one of the traditional crafts originating from the castle town of Aizu. It is being one of the crafts with the longest ongoing history in Japan and dates back to about 400 years. Aizu maki-e is well known for its bold and decorative designs that have a gradation of colors and incorporates an expert polishing technique making them quite appealing. Applied to the fountain pen are varied lively designs of raden (an inlayed diversity of sea shells) drawing fine lines that add a gradation, which expresses the “Aurora.” Closed Length 6.1" Posted Length 7.1" Barrel Length 4.4" Barrel Diameter 0.6" Section Diameter 0.4" Ink Capacity 1.5 ml Filling System Cartridge-Converter Cap Type Threaded Clip With Clip Cartridge Capacity 1.5 ml Converter Capacity 0.6 ml Postable Not Postable Pen Weight 37.5 g And from Platinum's site. So far.
Love the design and the Raden, but do need to ink it. Will do so next week.

I will normally buy a duplicate for one I both want to write with and collect unused. I have two MB Agatha Vermeils for this reason and a couple of Hemingways for the same reason. Someday the unused ones will go on the market, but I don't think my "users" ever will. I get it Jar! :)

That is a beautiful pen. Maybe one year my tax refund will allow me something larger than my Pelikan M150.

The Japanese just know how to create fountain pens.
From their less expensive lines to their flaming expensive pens they seem to take great pride in their work. Take the Paulownia wood boxes that the more expensive pens come in. These appear to be hand made and when you open them to get to the pen, the top of the box is suctioned onto the bottom just by the precision fitting of the top and bottom. When you put the top back on the box, you can feel the air being pushed out of the box. Seriously nice work. This year has been the year of the Japanese pen for me. The last 4 or 5 I have purchased were from Japanese companies. I have not been disappointed. Even Cross fountain pens like the Peerless 125 has a nib branded as a Cross but made by Sailor. I acquired the Platinum and Gold plated model and I have to say that it is one of the finest writing experiences out of the box that I can ever remember. Very satisfying! And it sent me on a hunt for some Sailor pens. Photos courtesy of Cross.
