AD vs. Gray Market
Ok, here's the question:
Assuming all things equal, how much more would you pay to an AD over gray dealer for the same watch? In other words, how uch of a premium would you pay to buy from an AD? |

For me personally, unless they can get darn close to the GMD price, I'll most likely go through the gray dealer. No taxes and in certain states the taxes can really add up (e.g., Tennessee at 9.25%). I would probably be willing to spend up to 500 dollars at an AD, watch dependent.

If both products are the same, BNIB, same serial, open papers, I would almost always go with gray dealer if they are cheaper. The only exception I could really see is if that gray dealer happened to be online or away from my local residence to where I could not have the watch that instant. In that case I would probably be willing to pay ~$500-1k difference depending on the watch just to bring it home that day. Other than that, I really don't have any other motivation in purchasing from an AD over a gray dealer.

I've bought from both and will likely never buy from an AD again, unless I can get some stella deal like the guy on this board that got a deep sea, milgauss and daytona for $20k. I live in a state with zero sales tax too.
Its just like a car - do you want to buy new or used? I like to buy a very nice 2 year old car and save $$$$$. I bought a very nice BMW X5 that was 2 years old for $28k, new it would have been $50k. I dont see the point,. |

I paid $300 more through my AD than I could have paid for a gray market watch. I felt it was money well-spent in order to establish a local relationship. That being said, any amount more than $500 would almost certainly push me towards a reputable gray dealer.

500 is probably the limit for me. Then, if you're buying locally from the AD but they grey is elsewhere, you gotta figure in tax (7% )

What are the reputable grey market dealers for Rolex? It seems like there are tons of grey for other brands but I haven't ever seen particularly positive feedback on a Rolex grey dealer - dunno if it's because this info is not allowed on the forum. I'd appreciate it if someone could PM recommendations to me if they aren't allowed here.

OK, I've actually seen those two sites before and browsed through them - so tons of poeple buy from there and have had good experiences then? That's good to hear.

And by the way, to actually answer the original poster's question, it depends on the price of the piece, but for a $9K two-tone DateJust I'd probably be willing to pay more than $500 over grey to buy from an AD, but the problem is I haven't seen any store come anywhere close. Problem is, even if a local AD gives a 15% discount, the 8%+ sales tax obliterates that, whereas the greys seem to discount around 20%.

I bought from swissluxury.com. Bought a TT Sub blue for my dad's retirement gift. Watch was BNIB with all stickers, etc. Great experience with them. And got an exceptional deal over AD prices.
