The problem with the dark dials and the silver hands is when there isn't good lighting so that there is little reflection off of the hands causing them to black out and get lost in the dial.

I wear multifocals and can easily see the time on my Daytona.

If I take my glasses off I can’t see the time on ANY watch.

Same problem here

Similar watch as well!

The white dial 116520 can be super legible in most lighting conditions as the hands tend to show up dark against the background.

Throw in a dab of Chromalight and you are good to go, not exactly a "field watch" but easy to read at a glance.

I have 2 Daytonas and they are gorgeous but they are simply not very easy to see the time on under many lighting conditions and that is what it is. The Daytona has a very busy face and while it's gorgeous to look at and gives the sense of great complication, Gravitas and beauty to a beholder you can stare at it mesmerized and never actually see the time. A chronograph by it's nature doesn't have to be so cluttered looking. My IWC 3717 has a Chronograph, date, and day of week and it's the most legible watch to tell time with I have ever owned. It's just the way the face is designed. It's not as gorgeous as a Daytona but if I need to see the time quickly and be discreet about it under less than ideal lighting conditions it's the one I wear.

But it is not a easy watch to read for a chronograph, and in my
eyes, that is not a good thing for any watch.Of course you will defend the
watch you own.But i know many people who have not bought the Daytona
because of this reason.
I appreciate your comments and realized you were not talking about it being ugly. My point, had I not read peoples comments about Daytona legibility when I first joined TRF, I would not have known there was a perceived legibility issue having not personally experienced any. When timing B roll segments for commercials I was producing, my Daytona was always way more accurate than my Speedy, Porsche Design or any of my other chronographs. I always checked these against the digital time codes as a sort of fun sport for me. The edit suite guys were always fascinated that I was timing with something I wore on my wrist. The Porsche Design was always their favorite looks wise.

There are other watches that are way busier than Daytona. My Breitling Navitimer is one of my most favorite watches but extremely busy dial!

Regarding the Daytona I am still quite confused, because it seems that it changes quite a lot the legibility in consideration of the light; in certain circumstances it seems that the lighter dials (white, silver, gold) are more readable, with different types of lights I prefer the contrast of the black dials.

I also agree that the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is one of the most legible chronographs, and indeed it is the contract between the silver hands and the full mat black dial that grant such good legibility.
Among the white dial chrono, I think it's easy to read the IWC Portugieser with blue hands & numbers (not the version with golden hands & numbers that is more elegant and classic but less legible).

I now own a black 16520 and white/silver 6263, both of which have better legibility than modern Daytonas for some reason. Something to do with the design of the hands and the sub-dials. What's surprising is that even though it's smaller, the old 6263 has the best legibility of any of them.

I agree. This is why it has bothered me when people on TRF say things about Daytona legibility!? Every chronograph I own with the exception of my Speedy and my Porsche Design all have equally busy dials. That’s the nature of Chronographs but years ago they were an essential tool for me in my advertising and commercial production agency.

For current models, all white or panda, says my human factors team. For legibility. As stated earlier, those are not particularly legible

All interesting watches but not really furthering the choice of which is the most legible Daytona as none qualify! There are plenty of chronos to be had but only a small fraction are Daytonas!!!

I like Daytona, i’ve should add it couples year ago to my collection...
I don’t have any issue reading the time, but the only problem when I don’t have my sunglasses.!

I like chronographs and own several varieties at any one time.

All are somewhat challenging to read. Busy dials.

But, overtime you gain the ability to quick glance and know what’s what.

The Speedy is probably easiest followed by the AP and then the Daytona.

What hurts the Daytona a bit is its smaller size and depending on the specific reference, contrast issues.

I believe all are equally illegible “at-a-glance” unless you apply a touch of red paint.

I acknowledge that you can get a great, highly legible shot of a Daytona. However, the following pictures represent my opinion of the timepiece. If ound in many lighting conditions the hands just evaporated. As a piece of man jewelry its great, as a timepiece... not so much (to me).

All of my light colored dial watches suffer from the hand glare phenomenon. Not unique to the 116500. In practical use, I've never had an issue reading my Daytona.

OP41 turquoise has the same issue with white hands on light dial disappearing. As does silver dialed Lange.

Big Fat Racing Hands.
For the life of me I don’t know why Rolex doesn’t start a “hi-vis hands” option inside any product line for folks who need glasses to read their watch.

OP mentioned that in post 1

AD or RSC could fit them upon request.
