Rolex/Tudor - Real Value - Most Popular vs. Rare/Reduced Circulation
When you looking to purchase a Rolex/Tudor for your collection, which adds greater value to your Rolex/Tudor, the currently most popular models or those that are rare or have reduced circulation?

I don't buy based on "value"/popularity/hype/rarity.
Only interested in models that truly speak to me, look and feel good on my individual wrist, or have a special meaning to me somehow. |

Is this a trick question?
The examples that are worth more would add to the actual value of a collection. However, I don't think that actual value is why most collectors collect. A collection tells a story, or has some direction, and that adds personal value to the collector. The dollar value is just a side bonus that rides along. To many of us, a bunch of watches shown isn't much more than that. Without seeing the goal or commonality, we don't get-it. Still, we all do enjoy seeing and enjoying all watches, rare, high-dollar, or daily beater.

I pursue and acquire watches that have meaning to me regardless of value or popularity.

I'm a simple person; I wear watches I like to wear. Nothing else really enters into the question anymore. My collection reflect what I like on my wrist and little more. I've owned hyped watches but they've never stuck!

I appreciate everyone's response. Not a trick question. Just curious how people on this site, who, needless to say, enjoy watches more than most, approach their purchases.
I agree, you had better be the biggest fan of whatever you acquire because you have to live with it. |

I have a buddy of mine who managed to score a 1967 Tudor Prince Sub on an oyster bracelet for $1000 from a guy who is not in the watch collecting community, or knows anything about watches. He got it back in 1981 as partial payment on a job he did for someone who had a collection.
The watch has been inspected and openned and is legit. The watch is pretty much a pre-ceramic Rolex Subdate except it has a Tudor dial. I don't collect vintage pieces, but if I did, this would be the only Tudor I'd ever buy as it's basically a Rolex. Even the caseback is engraved with Rolex on it. |
