I store my watches in a watch box in my safe when not being worn. As for your concerns with the muggings going on... be insured and be smart about where you are and who's around you. If you plan on going somewhere "sketchy" don't wear a nice watch. Simple as that.
I also have a leather 3 watch roll I bought off amazon for ~$40 for when I travel.
