to buy a 2 tone Sub or SD, I can't decide
I'm pulling the trigger on a pre-owned Rolex this week, if I can find one in truly excellent condition.
But I'm going back and forth between a Submariner Date 116613 steel/gold, black, and a Sea-Dweller 126603 steel/gold, black. I had a Sub 16613 steel/gold with black dial that I loved but lost it in a robbery. At first I thought of not replacing it when I saw the current prices, but every time I glance at my wrist for the time and my Sub is not there, I want it back more and more. My wrist requires an 8 1/4 inch bracelet, so I don't think the Sea-Dweller would look totally humongous on me. I like that the new SD in two tone looks like an oversized Sub, but in regard to investment, are Sea-Dweller's in demand and raising in value as quickly as Submariners are? I plan to wear the watch daily, so I'm thinking the SD might be a bit too much bling to have on my wrist every day? Most of you know a lot more about the two watches than I, so I'm hoping to hear any thoughts you might have along these lines and anything I might be missing. Thanks in advance and thanks to this forum owner for making this place for Rolex peeps to meet and share. I've got to learn to type faster and smaller, when I submit a thread I find I've been logged off the forum. |

With a large wrist... I would go with the SD. Buy the one that will look and feel good on your wrist. As for value, you really can’t go wrong with either one.

The SD43 is truly a special watch. I see subs extremely often. I don’t know that I’ve ever come across someone else wearing an SD43. I love mine.

The Rolex Boutique in Boston had a TT SD in stock in the case today for sale. You should try and call them tomorrow to see if they will sell it to you. They open at 11am. Just in case you aren’t aware of the store it is brand new and it just opened to the public today.
Good luck and I hope this helps. |

Between those two and a large wrist, definitely the sea dweller. Only reason I'd choose the submariner is for blue dial which you didn't mention.
Would certainly find a way to try one on first though, good luck. |

Assuming you find the SD43 comfortable, I'd imagine it would be better proportioned to your wrist.

I love it! We seem to have a majority in favor of the SD which is exactly what I was hoping to hear. But having never seen one in person, I needed to hear from someone who has.
My Sub looked great, but I'd occasionally wished it had been a bit bigger to match the scale of my large wrist. Then I saw pics of the SD in TT and began salivating! A huge thank you very much to each of you. Now my search is focused. This is going to be fun. |

Visit the Rolex Boutique in Boston and see what they have, that will also help make up your mind. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Seadweller all the way. The TT SD43 always puts a smile on my face. I have come across this reference at several ADs over the past year as a walk in with no history; sometimes in the case, sometimes just by asking. Should be relatively easy to get new with at most a short wait. Would have picked one up but the movement thread had me a little spooked, so went 216570 for the time being, but still on my short list.

No surprise that I would go for the Sub TT.

There's no bad choice, it's purely down to personal preference on the wrist. You need to try them on in 41mm and 43mm and see which one sings to you the most.
Personally, I'd pick the Sea-Dweller because I prefer a beefier size in a diver, within reason. However, the Sub will be easier to sell if you have to, as people tend to prefer its smaller size and slimmer case. None are worth investing into, IMHO. They're meant to be worn and enjoyed! I got the TT Bluesy 41 last year and I love it. Had Rolex made a SD43 TT blue dial, I might have gone for that. |

Well, you've already had a sub, so give the SD a whirl.
You've got the wrist for it. |

SD43 would look great on your wrist. IMHO, for that matter, the DSSD/JCDSSD might be worth trying on as well if you can come across one.

With your wrist size, I'd also suggest going with the SD43. I don't think that it'd look too bling or awkward on someone with your wrist size, in both steel and TT, and in fact, I think it'd look perfect.

I’m deciding same thing now. I tried on 2 tone SD and loved it. There isn’t as huge a demand for them though like the sub. But man the SD felt great. I loved how it sat off my wrist more than my standard subs.

SD43. It's cool. Two tones you can come by the AD route, and then you have some purchase history the next time you want something. The diver's extension is a nice bonus for your wrist size. Going to be much less common. There are probably 1000x+ more TT subs out there than TT SD43s. I have a sd43 in SS and a sub ss and I probably would keep the SD if I had to part ways. The fact that you can sell a sub for more than an sd43 is ludicrous to me.

I bought the SD TT vs the Sub because it had a better look/design and I was already used to a 44mm. The additional minute marks around the dial seem to give it more balance vs in the TT the sub seems like it is missing something. Plus the SD flows better into the bracelet more than the Sub. Look at pics side by side and you'll see what I mean.

I think the SD43 is a great choice. I have the SS model and I can tell you that it has a fantastic wrist presence. Plus, there's the glidelock for dialing in a perfect fit during the heat of the summer months. Btw, if the Boutique purchase doesn't work out, try checking AD's within a 100-mile radius of where you live. Explain what happened with your previous watch. It might help.

I’d get the SD 43 in your case, if.....your wrist can pull it off.

If I had to choose one, I would take a TT Submariner over a TT Sea Dweller, but both are awesome.

Can't go wrong either way. With your wrist size, maybe the TT SD might be the way to go

I'm seeing a few votes coming in for staying with a Sub, but as WatchWatcher Larry said, I've already had a sub so I'm going with the SD TT.
I thought I had a shot at the one at the Rolex Boutique in Boston today but I learned I had to buy it in person and I couldn't convince them to hold it for me until I could catch a flight there first thing in the morning. They let me know late today that is sold. So, I made calls to a number of ADs within a couple of hours drive and two felt they could help sooner or later and took my contact into with a promise to call if one lands in their stores. One asked me to come by their store sometime so we can meet and I think that's a very good idea that might increase the chance of them remembering me when one shows up. That's on next weeks TO DO list if I can get a free day. I'm retired and should have tons of free time, but sometimes it seems I had more time when I was working 60 hours a week. But it's probably because gravity is ten times stronger now and what I could do in an hour then takes all day now, if I can even remember to do it, or even care of it gets done. Getting a Rolex back on my wrist is the number one thing I've got an overload of care piled for. Thanks to all for the great ideas on which I should go for and the tips on how to go about finding one. This is a great forum. You are all extremely helpful. |
