Sub is perfect. Don't care whether is king but certainly is a great watch perfect for any occasion, can dress up or down depending on your will, is robust and a watch you can pass on to your kid and still be cool. It's not hype. It has been here before the word hype has entered the vocabulary. I have a 1991 tritium 16610, a BLNR, a 116520, a 16710, a pam 112 but my 114060 is my daily one. Looks great in any occasion and never failed me. What else someone should ask? Never considered if it's good with what I wear or where I am a going to meeting, drink, sea or mountain. It is OK with everything. Especially the no date is simply a perfect one watch.

Are there better divers out there? Better watches out there? Certainly.

But there are not a sub.

At one point perhaps 30 or 40 years ago I could have agreed but today the Sub is pretty much without purpose as other than a popular pricy fashion trinket. It's bright and shiny and well made but that doesn't make it either the ultimate or an absolute must. I find it oversized, over priced, over sought after, overly common, and over the top. It's a fine watch and should be owned if one wants one. For me I like the feel of the Yacht Master more on my wrist. I also like its looks better. Not to mention it's not owned by every watch collector without imagination who just must follow the herd. Regardless I'm signed up to buy a sub if one appears; a bluesy, fwiw.
Please don't hold back. You are among friends. You can tell us how you really feel. Ha ha, I'm just kidding. You make some great points.

Removing mythical British secrets agents from the picture, real British military divers used the 6538 big crown. The British Ministry of Defense contacted Rolex and they issued 6538s to their divers. They removed the coin edge bezel and replaced it with the teeth style bezel which then became standard on the 5513 and 5512 onwards to today since it was so much more functional.

That's realistic that at one point if one had a Sub one had "The Dive Watch." As I said, today it's just another gaudy bauble.

The standard make believe dive/secret agent jewelry watch for those who are risk adverse and lack imagination and who are flush with cash and hoping to increase their wealth; no doubt.

Lee I often find your posts on the Forum arrogant and condescending. It is very apparent you find Submariners and GMTs distasteful since you mention it in every one of your posts. To many the most iconic watch in history is the Submariner and for good reason. A great friend told me years ago sometimes the best comment is the unsaid comment. To many of us military veterans Submariners and GMTs are the best watches Rolex has ever produced. My collection is complete with a Submariner, BLRO and BLNR. I would never purchase a Daytona or Yachmaster but I don't have to write disparaging remarks everytime they are mentioned in a post. I appreciate those models but don't desire either one. Be positive, encouraging and supportive.

Padi56,

Wonderful post - hate you lost the SD but you lost it doing meaningful work in the Red Sea. Really appreciate reading stories of folks actually using their watches as they were intended to be used for is liberating to read. I have had my 5 digit GMT II and Sea Dweller for most of my U.S. Military career. 37 countries, 2 summits, 8 deployments and 4 combat tours. Always had one of them on my wrist and happy to have the rich history, dings, scratches, and chips infused into both of them.

I just like to call my 14060M the quintessential dive watch.

If you own one and you are not a saturation diver, it's everything a dive watch should be, in the water or in the office, or at a barbecue.

The dweller beats any sub hands down as a dive watch.Only people
who do no know much about watches would rate a sub better.

I get that - but people like me that could care less about diving and like the look of the sub way better and think the dweller is too big. So rating is more than just technical, there is also appeal and history.

Nonsense.

There are quite a few knowledgeable people on this board who prefer the Submariner to the other Rolex divers.

I'm not knocking the Sea Dweller or the Deep Sea, but unless you need one for saturation diving, and almost no one does these days, it's just that the Submariner for most folks is a robust, masculine, and practical watch that is better suited to many people's needs.

Now, if your criteria are purely about depth ratings and helium escape valves, then you're empirically correct.

For a lot of people, it boils down to style, comfort, practicality, and value and that is where the Subs dominate.

I personally find the SD bezel a little to ‘busy’ for me with all the minute markers on it.

Personal preference.

Have been offered the SD on a number of occasions and IMO doesn’t supersede the Sub in any shape or form so have always declined.

Agreed 100%.

I own both an SD43 and a 116610LN, and for me the Sub wins the day without breaking sweat. Yes the SD43 is very weighty and robustly made, and has the better specs on-paper, but 300m or 1220m makes not an ounce of difference to me as I'm not a saturation diver living in the 1960's. For comfort, size, wearability, versatility, real world use, and (in my experience) the better and more reliable movement, then the Sub is by far my personal choice of the two.

The SD only begins to beat the Sub at 1,000 feet, otherwise nope.

I 100% agree with you Grady. I’ve owned them all and all at the same time.

Absolutely nothing against the SD43 or Deepsea, but in terms what I value most in a watch the Submariner is what I prefer and still own.

Thanks for the advice; it's my perspective, I'll shut-up for now. FWIW, I don't consider watches more than a past time and certainly not worth getting bent out of shape over. Sorry if my perspectives offend you (or anyone for that matter). Thanks for the heart felt feed back.

Subs are fine but "be all and end all dive watch for all time" they're not. I also had an 114060 so I've had multiple subs and at the same time. I'm waiting for a bluesy as I said. I just won't pretend it's more than a bobble for the wrist. Not the be all end all of dive watches. (Nor the king of the jungle.(talking about mixed metaphors.) Sorry.

Not a problem; disagreements make good grounds for growth!!! I might add that I doubt very few divers who are serious divers would go after a Sub as their primary dive watch today. Back in the day it was THE dive watch.

Yes. It's the quintessential Rolex.

It is to Rolex what E-class is for Mercedes. Not the most expensive top model, not even close... but the most reliable and most important.

Was confused for a second reading this. When you mentioned gaudy bauble thought you were referring to your platinum DD. Now I see where I made my mistake.
