I must have mis-read the original post…

I read “king” of divers… not the most iconic or best value or whatever…

King, to me in this case, is the most technical diver watch that can reach the depth others cannot.

So without a doubt, it would be Omega ultra deep pro.

If it has to be Rolex, it would be the seadweller deepsea.

Sub is a wonderful and iconic watch.. but it’s only king of being the most popular diver imo.

Btw, I own a sub so not hatin. Lol

At one point perhaps 30 or 40 years ago I could have agreed but today the Sub is pretty much without purpose as other than a popular pricy fashion trinket. It's bright and shiny and well made but that doesn't make it either the ultimate or an absolute must. I find it oversized, over priced, over sought after, overly common, and over the top. It's a fine watch and should be owned if one wants one. For me I like the feel of the Yacht Master more on my wrist. I also like its looks better. Not to mention it's not owned by every watch collector without imagination who just must follow the herd. Regardless I'm signed up to buy a sub if one appears; a bluesy, fwiw.
I cannot tell if you love or hate the sub. I used to date women like that, it was painful.

Oh no, you mentioned Omega which I could make some very good arguments from their dive line. “King” to many is the most popular but one could also argue if McDonalds makes the best hamburger of all times because they sold more of those as well.

Not fond of the all black; like the looks of the bluesy quite a lot and as I mentioned I've got one on order. I just draw the line at trying to promote it as the king of all dive watches or that it needs to be in everyones collection. It's a great watch with a great history but it's time as the king of dive watches is thirty years in the past. It's a great Rolex with a tremendous history. There are far better watches for real diving however.

I'm not knocking the Sea Dweller or the Deep Sea, but unless you need one for saturation diving, and almost no one does these days, it's just that the Submariner for most folks is a robust, masculine, and practical watch that is better suited to many people's needs.

Now, if your criteria are purely about depth ratings and helium escape valves, then you're empirically correct.

For a lot of people, it boils down to style, comfort, practicality, and value and that is where the Subs dominate.
The Sub is a legend,no denying that fact. But the best diver?
Rolex do make the dweller for a reason. It is a tougher watch,
its not just about depth.I was issued with a military sub,so i do
know what i am talking about, unlike many on here.
But like many have said, the Sub gets the job done.
Lets face it,many brands make great back up dive watches today,
and Rolex subs are no where near to being the most popular or the
best. How many divers do you think use a watch in the subs price
class,as a back up dive watch today?

Is this a trick question?

Sub is perhaps the most popular diver, but that means it is not a king. A king can't be such common. The king of Rolex divers is not doubt the DSSD.

Some of you are over thinking and taking it too literally.

Everyone knows that some dive watches can dive deeper, some dive watches are more affordable for divers, etc.

Sub is the overall king in the diver class of watches. Period.

I like older Submariners but the new ones look shiny, bulky and unfinished (just my opinion) For a time I had the 300m Omega Bond Style with sword hands and printed black dial that came before the co-ax movement was introduced. It was a fine watch but not so nice or comfortable as my 5513 but it looked better than any of the new overweight Submariners/Seadwellers. If I were shopping now I'd probably go for the Tudor, not just because its better value but has a more sensible design and feel.

It’s like this, if I had any other dive watch other than a sub, technically better or not, more expensive or less, etc, I would always look at it and think, man it’s not a sub. There are more that think like me than not, thus the sub popularity. I don’t know what if anything can change this. Perception and brand strength is strong with this one.

“King” may not be the best word to describe it, but let’s just say it is an iconic reference. There’s no doubt it holds a special place of significance in the world of wrist watch history.

This is too smart of a post for this forum. Let’s get back to steering wheel and watches posts.

These days all expensive Swiss mechanical watches are anachronistic gaudy baubles, including yours. We all understand that. Most of us are polite enough to not use it as an argument against particular models, though.
