Value of Aftermarket "Enhancements"
I'm looking for opinions! After years of aspiring to own a Rolex, I have just purchased one, a stainless steel Men's Oyster Perpetual DateJust. It has 18k white gold hands, a silver face, Jubilee bracelet - represented as all original - BUT - it has had diamond markets and a diamond bezel added. Questions: 1. Does Rolex use diamonds, or are watches with diamonds an aftermarket enhancement? 2. Does this enhancement in any way detract from the watch's appeal to Rolex afficianados? What will an Authorized Dealer say? 3. Is this watch too flashy for business wear? BTW: I paid $2,350. Dealer said new it'd go for $17k. I think he was exaggerating just a tad - I put the value at about $5,000, but then again things are 'worth' what a buyer will pay, right? I'm new to the Forum. You are the experts. I value your feedback! Last edited by ExpatUA; 8 May 2009 at 02:55 AM.. Reason: Cleaning errors |

Rolex does have certain lines of watches that do use diamonds direct from the factory.
Being that it is aftermarket (as you seem to be sure of it), here it wouldn't add much to the value. That said, there are some who would probably like the bling factor and pay a bit more for it even though it is aftermarket. However, since it is aftermarket, Rolex will either 1) refuse to service the watch or 2) basically force you to pay to have the aftermarket parts replaced with factory original bezel and dial. The DJ, I don't believe comes from the factory with a diamond bezel, but I could be wrong. AD isn't going to care about the watch one way or the other. I would say the watch is just fine for business wear. I've seen gaudy watches in work environments, and none as bad as those cheap Swarovski crystal lined watches. Post some pics of the watch if you get a chance. Welcome to the forum. And being that it's a stainless steel DJ, not worth anything close to 17k. 5k is probably right for a used one. Replacement cost would be a bit higher (a grand or so, just for the SS model).

You have already bought it and you like it so, WEAR and ENJOY it. There is the issue of a Rolex service with the after market parts. If you send your watch in for service/repair, Rolex will not work on it unless you agree for them to bring the watch back to original. And you will not get the aftermarket parts back. No big deal as any decent watchmaker can service your watch. If you need replacement parts, use someone like Bob Ridley when you have the need for repair.
Now post some pictures and enjoy that watch. Last edited by redshirt1957; 8 May 2009 at 01:59 AM.. Reason: I see Frank beat me to it! |

It`s a bit like customising a car , very expensive and you very rarely recuperate the money spent on it when you sell . Collecters cars and watches only go good money when they are 100% original . The main thing is that you like it .

I would think any aftermarket enhancements would devalue the Rolex watch.
