I have recently starting search for my first Rolex. Wanted one for a while and guess I just want a new one from an AD. I want to know it is new & I'm the first owner as has been said. Also I am not in a big rush. I'm trying to get an OP 36 Candy Pink or/and (eventually) an OP Submariner. Whenever those 2 pop up for me I'll get them. Nothing against going grey if you want it now & are happy with that.
Kind of thinking of getting something now to fill the new watch itch I have of late. Maybe an IWC pilot. |

I would rather wait and buy a brand new watch from my AD. But for the watches I want it is months, not years. So long as I know I will definitely receive my watch I am happy to wait. Not in a hurry. It would be different if I thought my AD was putting me on a 'waiting list' where the watch never arrives.

It would depend on how badly I wanted whatever watch it is. There isn’t anything Rolex is doing that really interests me at the moment.
I wouldn’t take either SS GMT (BLRO/BLNR) at retail because those models don’t interest me at the moment. I’m not sure whether I’d be into a Daytona at retail right now because I have a D520 sitting in my watch box gathering dust as it is. I definitely don’t want one bad enough to pay grey prices for them. |

I feel like most of the people who refuse to go grey (in the current market) either have or had every piece they want or have developed a good enough historical relationship with their AD so they dont have to contemplate going grey
It would be interesting to see if those guys would change their tunes if they were faced with the realistic wait time of between 5 years and never |

The only Rolex remaining that I want is a Pepsi on steel bracelet. $9500 at 2021 prices. I’ve looked at older models selling at $21-22k is ridiculous. It’s not a need and although I can easily afford it, I refuse to pay that kind of mark-up. #Principle

If time = money we are already spending over msrp @ ADs. Some more than others.

It really doesn't in this case, but it is a favorite rationalization tactic we use when we pay way too much.
Paying an $18,000 premium to get a SS Daytona 2 years faster is the financial equivalent of leasing it for $750/month for 24 months and then paying the full retail new price at the end of the lease. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk |

Assuming i had some money in my pocket for a Pepsi, but no spend history, here are my 2 options: Go and Kiss an ADs ass on a monthly basis for anything up to 5 years while also being pressured to buy this or that to help "bump me up the list". Meanwhile, the RRP on that Pepsi goes up every year until i get the call. Or, buy it now, forget about "investment potential" or possible loss and enjoy the watch |

i'm not a msrp only person but i probably wouldn't go over 30-40% msrp (depending on the market). anyone into sneakers knows that at some point you're gonna be paying stupid premiums so i'm 100% ok with them, but there's a line

I totally understand how people with some money would look down the barrel of A: asking nicely and then waiting til their dead to "get the call" B: Building out your wifes watch box in the hopes it curries favor with your AD C: Stump up the difference and get what you want I feel like people who start these conversations about "never paying over retail" dont understand that there are people out there where "just waiting for a while" is not an option as they will NEVER get the call without greasing a few palms first |

Who in their right mind wouldn’t take a panda Daytona for 14k. That’s an immediate 20k profit. Would you take 20k for free?

Perhaps it depends on your situation in life?
Financial, personal, age. For me as I have gotten older I have realized that our time on this earth is limited. Wait too long for something you really desire and can afford may mean you miss out. I have bought gray but not at the very highly inflated prices currently. |

This question must be placed in the proper context. Is your question also assuming that the secondary market prices for the BLRO and Daytona are at price levels you stated?
For me, if the answer is yes, i.e. the secondary market prices for both are as stated, I will not buy. But if the prices are at the present secondary market prices, and someone legit is selling at the prices you stated, I would buy them because I am hypothetically speaking not stupid. Quote:

Maybe the OP is assuming that you would keep the watch and not flip it?

Yes, I will not pay over MSRP. Im not going to be duped and dont have the ego and need to feel like I have the latest and greatest. I am also not a "Rolex" guy per se, but rather a "watch guy" and so dont have a burning desire to have it right now. Delay of gratification has never been a problem and have always found many great watches and some I have liked more or were more significant than whatever rolex I was interested in. Too many other great watches out there at MSRP is my issue.

$1 over MSRP sure, perhaps up to $500-1000 depending on the model (assume not paying tax)

Yeah I’d go over MSRP by that much. That’s essentially tax when buying from an AD. However, just saw Takuya sold a Pepsi on an oyster for 22k. My condolences to the buyer

Not adding anything new hear, but echoing some of what others have said above. It's not entirely principal as I'm willing to go above by 20% max depending on situation/model, etc., but there's a fine line that crosses over to the absurd. Everyone draws that line differently of course.

Will never pay a penny over MSRP. Will gladly spend my money on other brands that don't play these silly games.

It all depends on the market one is in. In my neck of the woods, Rolex has cut most of the old school ADs and left a couple larger ones. If you want one of the popular models they will get it for you, but you can be certain that its going to cost you very close to market one way or another and no where near MSRP. You can put your name on their so called list for MSRP and wait until the cows come home! The next nearest AD is in one of the richest counties in the U.S. only minutes from DC. Good luck with them!
