I think all this craze would be great if it were actually an interest in mechanical watches.

But I think it's a lot more of people looking to for a financial hedge, or worse, quick flip buck.

I personally still think the brands and AD's could do a lot better

Every so often I will swing by the AD and will eventually pick up the other watches I am after and may get the call for another Rolex piece. If not...c'est la vie
I am definitely eyeing other brands also. Life is too short to wait forever or pay too much to a grey IMO.

What are you "eyeing"?

I want to add:
  • Breitling Navitimer
    Cartier Santos
    Zenith Chronomaster sport
Breitling Heritage Premier Chrono (the pistachio dial one)
Glashutte (not sure what model yet)
    Numerous G shocks
    Omega AT small seconds

Think about it, all the sales guys see is dudes all day long, so if a hot MILF walked in, of course she has a better chance of getting the watch for you.
I've been in an AD when an unsuspecting 30 something young lady comes in to buy her husband a surprise Rolex for his birthday. She got the "Sorry, Rolex takes years to make, we have none" speach. She was not happy. She seemed to be type expecting be able to walk into the dealer and buy any Lexus she wanted.

Nothing real fancy but I have been looking at an Omega Worldtimer and possibly a new Chronoscope.

Why would anyone feel bad for employees who show up to a job daily when they know they have nothing to sell?

As for Rolex production... with random serials noone even knows what production is. Its fact that 2020 had reduced production and was stated to last 2 years in initial articles. So you can't tell me my math is bizarre when you have no discernable proof for your statement as well, other than sales quota from one AD, while factually the amount of ADs has been on a decline over 10 yrs so they should have a proportionate increase of reallocated inventory & sales if we're to follow your logic.

Amd finally, the "they've been increasing for so long they must increase forever argument."
Things are great right now because not many people are trying to cash in. When generations shift, and boomers start dying off leaving their millenials with large collections of watches to sell, the market will correct.
We still haven't had to face any of the economic impact of the pandemic. And if you think this hype won't fade as quick as it came, I think you're mistaken. People who say the hype will never die, weren't here before the hype.

You keep stating that the ADs have nothing to sell. What makes you think this??

ADs have never been better placed. Their allocation is at least as high as it’s been in the past, save for some pandemic interruptions to production, they are not being squeezed for inventory. In fact my AD admitted to me 6 months ago that they were receiving more with each shipment and that they were back to pre pandemic levels.

Hardly nothing to sell as you think. Today there is nothing LEFT to sell. Everything they receive is sold the moment their allocation is received. And nothing is discounted anymore. And that is why the constant flow of walk ins seeking a steel Daytona can be frustrating for the sales staff.

All I’m saying is see this from both sides.

I’ve always entertained other brands as per my signature. There are some interesting pieces out there if you truly love the hobby. They’re not the huge gains like you’d get with a Rolex piece from an AD, but I only own one watch right now that is in the red (worth less than I paid for it). All the others are a true joy to wear and own while still holding their value, or most times increasing in value. Yes, Omega, Panerai, Bvulgari, Cartier, etc. when bought right, can be immensely rewarding to wear, own and collect. Buying right almost never means buying retail and sometimes buying left field pieces you personally love. You’ll often find that other likeminded people will want what you liked. It happened to me with the cartier santos 100 xl. 10 years ago I bought one, yet nobody wanted them. I paid 3200$. Right now they’re 5k ish. It isn’t all about money, but its nice to know that my hobby and joy of wearing timepieces, is also an investment in a minor way.

I find it amusing that some people will continue to find somebody to blame for the situation we have today when this is in large a natural, organic evolution of the Rolex market.

Some blame Rolex for deliberately limiting productions. Some blame the ADs for selling/bundling the watches to the grey dealers. Some blame the flippers for being greedy. Some blame the grey dealers for manipulating the secondary prices collectively. Some blame the fools who pay 2x or 3x retail for certain models that fuel the grey market...etc.
