Official AD Selling pre-owned?
Hello,
Yesterday my wife went to an AD where she bought a DJ some years ago asking for SS Daytona (yes, poor dreamer) and of course she got automatic response of 2 to 5 years waiting list bla bla bla... For my surprise, later on the day the SA sent her a text offering a pre-owned SS Daytona for 38K.... Is that normal? |

Yep, AD'S sell pre owned. Almost every single AD in the UK sells pre owned.
7/10 times they are models which are a few years old so like a 2017 sub, 2016 explorer etc. Sent from my SM-F926B using Tapatalk |

No such thing as 5yr waiting list lol! 5yr wait=polite brush off.
My local AD has quite a few used peices. Only other stuff in the window is new bimetallic ladies prices. |

Yes, of course the 5 years answer is a brush off. What surprise me is Rolex allowing AD became greys, I think there is a big conflict of interest here....

Nop... dont make any sense pay 38K to an official dealer that is supposed to sell it a 13K; is not just the money, is simply not right .... and Official Dealer must be that "OFFICIAL"...
I rather prefer she buy it on Chrono24 or here on the classified. |

A few years ago I saw a 5 month old used Porsche GT4 at the dealership. 30k over list was the asking price for what was still a current production model.

Yes, of course they are doing their business and focus on their margin, but my question is more about Rolex or Porche in this case having a dealer promoting the grey market and the inflated pricing...I thought Rolex had strong ethics policy of their dealers, I see I was wrong

I suppose 'used' is okay at the AD whereas 'unworn' is only viable at a grey.

To buy a Daytona for 38k you would have to believe it was an investment (store of financial value) as opposed to a wristwatch.

38k is the current market price of a 116500 white dial, you better accept it as an investment to you or you dont buy it at all. nobody can really buy it at MSRP any more, either you go grey or spend the premium on other stuffs to get the watch from AD.

About the investment I have my doubts…. I think all the economists agree that, at least, it will be a good correction next year because the inflation, supply chain problem etc… if that happen, we will need to re-visit the investment idea… Anyway my wife love the watch, she doesn’t wanted it as an asset; put the 38K in the stock will give better results |

The AD is selling pre-owned not Grey. Standard model for most AD's and they will pay market trade prices for a watch coming in and retail it for current sale price.

Or... It could spend a week on the dealer's sister's wife's tennis partner's husband and then go back in the window!

I remember when AD's wouldn't touch a used watch at all or give you a price so dismal it wasn't worth it. Now trading in a piece is totally standard if you can actually get anything.
8 years ago : AD: "A watch can be seen as an investments and could increase in value. It's not really wasted money" Customer: "Great, can I trade in my GMT?" AD: "Maybe, if we did we will give you half that value of what you paid" Customer : "Great investment that was...." 2021: Customer: "Can I buy a GMT?" AD: "Not for a few years, why would we sell you one if you could just go out and double the money by flipping it?" Customer: "Can I trade in my GMT?" AD "Sure, but we have nothing available to trade it for"

Conflict of interest for sure.
Why would AD sell new when they can market it as pre owned and make 2-3 times over ;)

I have heard some ADs retail them internally and then buy them back internally. Then resell at a margin they want. Car dealers do this too. So technically used, it’s just been boomeranged.

There are half a dozen Rolex ADs in my city, and none of them sell preowned anything in the same physical store. At least they don’t show them out in the open. No matter which way you slice it, it’s just bad optics when the Rolex display cases are empty while the “preowned” section is filled to the brim with current production watches (sometimes even brand new with stickers) at 2x 3x retail. Everyone would justifiably think the AD doesn’t even bother hiding the funneling of watches right under the same roof.

To expect a car dealer to artificially suppress the prices of used cars seems...well, strange. And to expect them to not participate in a hot market because customers somehow expect a "fairer" price on (the customer's) principle seems like a strange expectation. And, really, watches are no different. Nobody is owed a good price on a new or used watch. I'm not suggesting that you should or shouldn't buy a Daytona at used market prices, but I'd offer that it is a stretch to refer to a Porsche dealer selling used cars as a "grey." To me, the watch market really isn't any different. I think WIS expectations have crossed the line into unrealistic. The market is the market.

Yes, very normal in USA. In metro dc area, baltimore /Towson/pikesville ad’s are loaded with preowned. Same for liljenquist Tyson’s Virgin ad. Empty rolex counters and any rolex you want in preowned aka ‘estate’ collection.
