Got the call and I need your advice

Hello,

My AD messaged me today for a new Rolex no date which a few months ago I told him that I would be interested in among others (1st choice is a PEPSI but it is gonna take very long time to get).

Currently I own a Hulk, a TT black face Dayton, and a 41 DJ blue with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. I also own other watches mainly Omegas and Panerai .

Do you think the Sub ND would make a nice addition to my collection especially that I own a Hulk ? or will it be some what repetitive. I chose the no date model because its the most iconic Rolex watch, it is simple with great aesthetic and fit, its the watch that made Rolex the brand that it is today.

I know in terms of desirability and resale value the date version performs better.

I would appreciate your advice.

Thanks,

The Submariner is an icon and no arguing that. That said, you have to evaluate your own collection and decide whether you want to add it.

If it were me, with your collection, I’d add the Submariner, I’d sell the LVC and use the funds for the BLRO. YMMV

If money is no object, add the no date. It’ll fit just fine in your collection. Two Subs with different colors and functions do not conflict with each other.

Some on this forum have two Daytonas, two GMTs, etc.etc.

Only buy the watch you want to wear and connect with.

This also, do not purchase a piece that doesn’t speak to you. If any watch doesn’t appeal to you, pass. Let the next person have a shot at it.

If you are asking, then you are probably not that keen on a Sub ND. Pass and wait for what you want

I would buy it and I think it’s a good complement to the Hulk.

+1

Just the fact that you need to ask the internet means you're personally not that interested. Resale and desirability seems to be your motivation here.

I would never sell the Hulk I love that piece, I bought it new back in 2016 at a discount before all this hype!

It is kind of a watch that I would like to pass on to my children

As I said, to each their own

When I think of building a collection a Submariner HAS to be part of it.

Add the Sub then

I think it would complement your existing collection superbly (probably even better than the BLNR IMO). Having a very classic, symmetrical all black watch will go nicely with the rest of your collection. I'd make that my daily and then wear the hulk on weekends and the TT / DJ for dress or evening occasions.

Actually, I never sold a watch. Value retention is important because I collect several watches and in case of extreme emergency I'd like to liquidate and not lose much. If resale is my motivation I can simply buy the watch and flip it for at least 30% profit but I'm not that kind of a guy!

I'm asking the forum (the internet) because some might already own more than one sub and they might give me some advice if this a good purchase or if they felt it was too much. At the end what would be the point of this forum if we can't exchange ideas or views and learn a thing or two!

Iconic, resale, desirability… honestly, who cares? If you do care about impressing a forum or wearing an “iconic” watch that 99.99999% of people won’t ever recognize or care about, then skip the nd sub (though I think ND performs just as well). If you like the watch, which I personally do more than a hulk, then buy it.

I'd do it. It's an icon and fits into any collection. For me personally, I have the new 126610LV (which I love), but choose to pair it with the larger SD43. Either way, you can't go wrong with the Sub.

Depends on your wrist... the hulk sits better on me than a new sub but I have small wrists.

Good thing that my boys already like the Hulk so I think I'm set for now but in the future who knows.... I try to teach them about watches and I usually take them with me when I make a purchase.

I don't need or care to impress anyone! When I mentioned resale value or desirability its because in back of my head I always take into consideration (with all my purchases) that I might sell / trade the watch for some reason although I never did before...

I own the Hulk as well and your post reminded me of what a beautiful, clean iconic model the Sub 124060 is. I’ll put back on my list. Get yours.

That's good, and I hear you on asking others on the internet for advice as that's what most of us are doing here. But I still stand with the fact that if you need to ask about a purchase decision then you don't really want the watch, and in fact you're seeking for someone to push you into it or out of buying.

With that in mind it would be a pass for me If I was in your shoes. I've passed on a few difficult to obtain SS sports models and don't regret it at all. The ones I did purchase I was 100% certain on without a doubt, and they've all remained in the collection.

I do love the Submariner though, I have the 114060, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone.

Sounds like you don’t love it. Therefore don’t do it. Before I spend thousands on a watch, and I have done so quite a few times, I need to be thinking about it pretty much constantly. I appreciate that all people are different though.

Most popular and desirable watch model of all time.
You are getting it at retail, way below market.
Of course buy it, unless you have $ liquidity issues.

Buy it. Wear it. Sell it (if you wish).

But if you just don't want to deal with something that you might not like, then don't buy it. I find that I can't truly tell how much I like a watch unless I've been wearing it for at least a few weeks. You figure you like a watch because you've seen it on IG and maybe even try it on in person for a few minutes, but living with it day to day is the real test to create the bond, beyond the initial excitement of owning something new. It's the novelty effect, like the high you get when you acquired something new that is desirable like the Sub. But after that effect die down, then you can really tell if you've bonded with it. For example, I struggle to love my Omega SMP as much as my other watches because of the braclet. I've changed it to a nato, but the verdict is still out. It bothered me for about a week that the stem from the crown is thinner than my other watches. But I can't let go of it because it's the closest thing I am ever going to be to a double O agent haha.
