Showering daily with your Oyster….

I’m sure this subject has been discussed before, and people speculate about reasons for and against showering daily with an Oyster.

I’m inquiring about two things, specifically:

1. Is there any data showing that it’s ok (or not ok)? Ordinarily I reject anecdotal evidence, but in this case, even anecdotal evidence would be of some value.

2. What is Rolex’s position on it? Again, I’m talking about showering daily with it on your wrist.

just make sure you wrap your arm in plastic wrap and hold it above the shower head...I have never had any issues when doing this method minus the fact that the one arm smells sometimes.

I won't even allow sunlight to enter the bunkered encasement I house my 1937 Rolex in.

If I showered with it I don't know if I would make another day on earth, blasphemy!

Showers and Rolex are, how would they say in your country like lamb and tunafish, nono!

It is not physically possible for a shower to affect a Rolex in any way, shape, or form.

It is unlikely that anybody would generate shower/Rolex data

My Rolex only gets wet when it's cleaning watch time. Never can understand why anybody would want to sleep or take a shower with a watch on.. JMHO..

Wrong! Many moons ago I dropped my 16013 and cracked the acrylic crystal. It was a quick fix. I still wear and wash a Rolex almost every time a take a shower. I try to be careful.

Rolex as many others are water resistant to at least 100m (not including Cenelli) You are advised to wash them occasionally in soap and water with a soft brush to clean them. It will not harm your watch in any way.

However, a accidental dropping of the watch in the shower could ruin your day. Having said that, I can live without my watch for 15-20 minutes it takes to shower. I wash mine in the sink. Safer that way.

I shower regularly with my GMT and SD43. I have never done so with a DJ or Explorer, and don't really plan to. There's so much information, good and bad, that I don't know what to think, so 100M or deeper watch I will shower with.

My view is that keeping your watch clean is good. I do, however, don't put regular soap in the watch, only liquid soap, as i think regular soap might leave a white residue. But that's just me being crazy.

It seems there are a lot of smart alecs on this forum who don’t use soap in the shower, are unaware of what a detergent is and what it does, and haven’t thought about the fact that the waterproofing is afforded by gaskets made of rubber that degrade over time… possibly much faster with repeated exposure to detergents.

Detergents do nothing except bind with oils in emulsion so that it can be washed away, they do not make water molecules smaller or allow them to sneak past the seals.

Seals are made of Viton or Nitrile, detergents will have no affect on them. Also, the exposed surface of the seals is miniscule; no detergent will "dry them" or affect them in any other way, even at that extremely tiny exposed bit.

Showers, hot tubs, or saunas will not affect your Rolex in any noticeable way.

I've gone from amused, to annoyed, to frustrated, to angry, to physically angry, to sad/feeling sorry, denial, back to annoyed and now I'm just pissed off at the stupidity.

ROLEX tells you to use a brush and soapy water!!! Can you shower with it???????

DAY-TO-DAY CARE
Thanks to Rolex expertise, your watch will require very little day-to-day care. You can help preserve its lustre by cleaning it occasionally with a microfibre cloth. You can also wash the case and bracelet from time to time using soapy water and a soft brush. Before cleaning your watch, always ensure that the winding crown is screwed down properly against the case to guarantee waterproofness.

Mine goes in shower every day as did my SMP 300 for 10 years and tag before that, zero problems. Also took them Scuba diving, swimming pools and water parks - trust me will be fine….

It’s not the data you asked for, but it is a direct quote from the manufacturer. Hopefully this will put your mind at ease:

“All you have to do after diving or a day at the beach is simply to rinse your watch with fresh water to remove any salt and sand deposits: wearing your watch while showering at the end of the day should do the trick.”

I have washed my Rolex watches for 20 years in the shower. A nice clarifying shampoo and BOOM! Sparkling clean.

And while now I have all new watches believe me I had some dubious older Submariners and DJ's when I started and had no idea their WR...still took them in the shower, pool, ocean and never a problem.

I have changed with age. During my initial 15 years of wearing Rolex my watch never left my wrist. Ever.

These days I never (or almost never) sleep nor shower with a watch on.

To answer the original question……’yes’ there is actual data on this subject. Rolex commissioned some rather extensive studies on this subject some years ago.

Unfortunately, they’re classified. So in order to see the report showing the pure data, you’d either be killed, water boarded while in the shower, or beaten with a gunnysack full of watches you had to buy to get the Rolex you wanted.
