Is it a bad idea to SELL a Rolex?
I have a DJ36 I picked up early this year from AD. These things don't appreciate like crazy of course, but seems like I could sell it for about what I paid for it.
It was gradually getting less wrist time, and then it's gotten almost none since my dad gave me his 16013 and I got it serviced. Generally if a watch doesn't get much wrist time I have no issues selling and moving on as I don't like to own things just for the sake of owning them. OTOH, seems like any Rolex (even a DJ) holds its value quite well these days, so as long as I don't need the money and/or liquidity (I don't) seems like I don't have much to lose even if I just box it up and keep it in a safe. It almost feels like cash in the bank these days. And if I change my mind later or want to wear it once in a while, I can do that too without worrying too much about massive depreciation. Thoughts on this? Seems like at the very least if I want to sell it I should wait until the New Year when the increases take effect... |

If the money is not needed, what would you with it from the sale?

It’s just a watch. Keep it if you like it and don’t want the money. Sell it if you don’t love it and don’t think you’ll wear it. The watch market is hot now, but who can predict 1,2,5, or 10 years from now? So, as a rule, only own the things you like.

Personally I don't see the point of holding on to things I don't love or get any decent utility out of. If I was you I'd be shipping it out the door.
The current daft situation with Rolex means lots of people seem to think they have to buy literally ANYTHING with the crown on it if they're offered it, and once they have it they can't sell it at any cost because...."investment". |

You may as well sell it if you are going to break even. In normal times the only Rolex that didn’t trade in at a loss was a stainless Daytona. It is hard to fathom that this will continue indefinitely.

IMHO, the only reason you should sell a watch is because you need the money for something else
If the cash is just going to sit in the bank, well, the watch may as well do that If there is another piece you have your eye on that you think would get more wrist time then sell that bad boy and pick up somtehing you're going to use |

I have my two forever watches with no other wants. But if push came to shove, in a blink of an eye they would be gone if need be. I hold no ties to any material object.

If you don’t wear it or want it, then go ahead and sell it. Although the Rolex does a great job of holding value, I doubt long term that it would beat an SP 500 index fund. I don’t really understand the argument for holding onto a Rolex you don’t need or want because it retains cash value (a Daytona, maybe, but that’s a special case!).
I sold two DJ 36 that I bought this summer. Traded them in for other watches, and got trade in value above what I paid by a few hundred dollars. |

I sold rolex to invest as people say the markets hot now but likely wont be in the future and you can earn 10%+ in the stock market so a rolex is losing you money

^^^This. Today it’s better to park your money in Rolex than the 1% interest you get from a checking/saving account. We are not talking 401K money.

You can always sell it later. What’s the harm in owning it for a little while. The decision will eventually make itself.

I sold one a year ago that I had grown tired of and wasn’t wearing much anymore with the intention of getting one that I would actually wear. I was not aware of how difficult it would be to replace. It is also worth about $2k more than when I sold it last year. I don’t miss the watch at all, but I do kick myself thinking that I should have assessed the situation before I sold it. I probably would have hung onto it while I waited for a new one. Just wanted to share my experience.

I totally understand that if a watch is getting no wrist time, it's a valid question to ask oneself "Is it worth hanging onto"?
I've sold plenty myself if they've become redundant When you bought the watch you must have wanted it for good reasons I think the key questions you need to ask yourself are as follows. Have I fallen out of love with the watch? Do I envisage keeping it to wear on specific occassions(like going out to dinner at a very nice restaurant)? If one answeres no to those questions, then the reasons for letting it go to a home where it's going to be more appreciated become more compelling on a number of levels. Other than that, the box won't take up much storage space. |

We sold one each and paid off the house mortgage, so that wasn’t a bad idea....

If you don't see yourself wearing the watch or if you have no particular interest in keeping it for any other reason (sentimental value, special occasion once every blue moon, investment potential, it decorates the box nicely, etc.), then sell.
You might not need the cash now, but if you need it tomorrow, you won't have to fire sell your watch to get cash ASAP. |

Being mortgage free is simply: the emotive feeling of being free of the debt vs positive return maths. Agreed that it does free up cash flow for other things however. Everyone is different regards selling… I would if I needed the capital to generate me greater returns elsewhere. |

I’ve only ever sold when I was absolutely certain that the reference wasn’t for me. For me that usually takes a year or two or three.
I’d give it some time, and see if you go back to wearing it once in a while |

Keep it. In some time you may find that you want to wear it again and there it will be.
Historically ( though not a guarantee) if a few years pass and you still don’t like wearing it, you can still capture the same value, or more. You may also want to use it trade for something else, or even gift it to someone. None of which is possible if you sell it for the relatively small amount of money that you don’t need. |
