Service dial on this GMT Master 2 16710?
Hi guys,
I recently purchased a GMT Master 2 "Coke", dated to July 1999. The watch is in superb condition and comes with the complete set - am very happy with it. It was originally bought from Hong Kong. This watch is an "A Series" and has a "Swiss Made" Dial. I've been doing some research on the watch and am not sure on whether to think it is a service dial or not - especially because this watch had a service in 2019. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks! |

Would you love the watch less? Don't worry and enjoy your watch. If you want certainty, bring it to the AD for confirmation.

Watch is completely tainted. I'll have to dispose of this disgusting "serviced Rolex" for you. I'll even waive my usual fee!

It's a good question. The only way I'd care is if the watch should have tritum, but has luminova. Then I'd consider finding a dial and doing a swap. Otherwise just let it ride.

A series normally have a "Swiss" only dial. Those were also frequent service dials for your reference when the tritium dials went dark, but that A serial should not have needed a replacement for lume issues, as they were Luminova. I have 2 A serial "Swiss" only watches. That said, it's Rolex and it could well have been a late A serial that had the newer dial from the factory. If it was serviced at the RSC, they can tell you what was done in 2019 if you call them.

My 116508 from 2000 is currently at RSC being serviced. I don't care about resale or value but will they arbitrarily replace the dial without saying anything? That would be a bit disturbing I think?

No - they should issue you with a qoute with a charge for dial change. You then accept or decline. If you decline they may not proceed with the service.

The 116508 did not exist in 2000. At the time it was the 16528 or 116528.

Late-A serial (A7 or later as I recall) 16710 would have a Swiss Made dial.

Swiss only dial was on 1998 models. Yours is not a service dial.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is meant by a service dial?
And why might it not be desirable? Thanks,

Some people prefer all original parts. But I think as long as something is period correct, it’s fine. But to replace a tritium dial with luminova? No thanks.

If it is a "full set" then it must have the service paperwork to verify?

Thanks so much for the information guys, much appreciated!
There is no service invoice or breakdown included, just a card from Rolex saying that it was serviced. I called up RSC and because I didn't own the watch then, I can't get the information. From what I have read, some A serials in late 1999 did have the "Swiss Made" dials as they transitioned into Super Luminova. I'm just trying to figure out if July 1999 is late enough lol. The Serial is A13****. Not sure if this helps? I will enjoy the watch regardless as I love it, just would be great to know :) |

A1 seems early seems early for Swiss Made. My SM 16710 had August 2000 papers (Hong Kong, like yours) and was A7, and from what I remember researching at that time, it was one of the earliest.
It's possible there was overlap, but as U and A are the recognised serial letters for Swiss-only dials, it makes sense that A1 would have been Swiss-only (though some folks may question the numerically ordered release of case numbers).

I actually had the choice of two 16710s when I bought mine. I chose the one I did because it has a spider dial. Not because it was cheaper, just unique.

I’m the original owner of an A16710 built in 99 I assume since I purchased it March 2000. It came with a Swiss Made dial. Also I think it’s really unlikely that a watch from this era would have a replacement dial.
