Has anyone checked Swiss Luxury recently on their prices of SS Daytonas? Go check and let me know their still isn't a supply and demand problem at hand.

SSD my first Rolex
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum as I just purchased my first Rolex. I already have Omega, Breitling, Panerai and Sinn. I waited for the right watch to come along, one that I wanted to wear. I was offered a black dial SS Daytona in 2007 by my regular AD for what was MSRP in 2007 because I was on the list. I turned it down at the time because I wanted a white dial SS Daytona and was not interested in the whole "flipping" thing. I would rather that it went to someone who wanted to wear it. Ignorant, I know... Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I happened to be at my AD just at opening time. He was excited because they had just received a white dial SS Daytona the night before. I joked that I was afraid that this would happen because now I had to make a decision! I went ahead and purchased it, but before I finished my transaction there were two other customers behind me ready to take it if I didn't. - I paid current MSRP for a V serial with the new GMTII clasp. - There are still waiting lists in my area. - Most of the waiting list people want Black Dials (already have WDs). - This is the first SSD I have seen in my area this year. - It was in the safe, not on display. - I bought it to wear... As far as the prices of the Daytona coming down - the one I just bought at MSRP was $2000 more than than MSRP for the one in 2007! People on lists in the past were paying significantly less at the AD than today. The price coming down is just the "flipper" and grey markets. I think that the combination of: 1) the Rolex price increases making it less affordable, 2) the lousy economy causing less disposable income, 3) along with current MSRP being approximately the same as the typical "Flip" price, therefore eliminating the flipper buyers (as was pointed out above) have put the Daytona in the current situation. BTW, I liked the Daytona before I knew that it was hard to get and I love mine - next up is the classic 14060M! Sorry so long, I'll do better next time... Mike |

Still a gray market premium over list in US
Good point. Nearly $1000 premium at this gray marketer. Maybe not quite as much as before but still a premium. In other words, demand is still GREATER than supply. Easy as that!

Great analysis. Should frustrate the Daytona-haters!

Great analysis. Shows the true situation in the US at least. Shows false the few repeated and obviously exaggerated claims that new Daytonas are piling up in AD cases and gathering dust. You have to wonder what motivates folks to make up such stuff. Maybe they are just upset about not having a Daytona. You make 3 great points about the combination of factors that make waiting lists a bit shorter now and the squeeze on gray marketers. It seems that Rolex is taking a lesson from Ticketmaster. It used to be that retail concert ticket prices were much lower than what scalpers were getting. Finally, Ticketmaster and concert promoters realized how much money they were leaving on the table and raised ticket list prices by a lot. Concert attendance and demand didn't drop. Prices didn't drop. The only thing that happened was that the scalpers (flippers) got squeezed: buying fewer tix to re-sell (flip) and selling fewer tickets at smaller premiums. |

I think that is absolutely true! I cannot believe the MSRP is $9000.00 that is crazy! And while they are not displayed, they are available here in Ga. at MSRP. Have not seen a white one but two black ones this week. This by no means a flood of them, but they are actually available. |

I feel a lot of folks thought or hoped the Zenith SS Daytona would be the next "Classic" like the 62XX Daytona's that came before. For a while it looked like that would be the case. I still think the Zenith's will be real collectable, but never will reach the level of the 60's-80's model. The current model "4130" has little chance until a larger case model comes out and is the next big thing. I think we will see the prices slide some what further, even more if the market keeps getting flooded with the really good fakes!

GOOD GOD MAN! No way! My SS and 18K Ebel Chronograph was a CSOC certified Chronometer, had a date, and a beautiful white face, and it was $5000.00. I wanted a Daytona about 14 years ago when my friend Scott Russell won his second Daytona bike race on his Muzzy Kawasaki, and he told me he really wanted to win the race because his liked the Rolex Daytona watches they gave him, he won 5 times, 5 SS Rolex Daytonas in total.
Now, there are sooo many other watches I am interested in buying. David |
