Dodgy looking crown marking on glass of 1996 sub

Looking at this from an established dealer, there is no service history or box with the watch but it has original Italian undated papers.

Does the little crown logo on the glass also look odd? I know it could be from the result of a service but I can't quite see a little 'S' marker in there. It also looks a bit off centre to me.

Even if the glass has been replaced by rolex there's no service history or box but there is original Italian papers that also aren't dated? Bit odd

Everything you read is opinion.

The etched crown is a series of dots/stars that are unique and arranged to form the crown. This one appears to be more of an imprint, rather than as you would expect it, plus it seems too easy to see and somewhat large.

Naturally, better images could render a different opinion.

i had to perform some voodoo to get a clean shot of mine. i was impressed to see this one so cleanly in a fairly normal looking photograph.

I have an old POS fake gold DD I bought in Mexico for $40 bucks - the crown on the crystal looks like that.

The watch itself looks genuine, Crystal not so much. Would be easy to swap it out with a genuine one.

Looks fine from here (recent-ish service crystal). Service crystals no longer have the sideways "S" in the LEC, and they can/will "pop" like that in the right lighting conditions.
Also, it may or may not be off center. It can appear off center depending on the angle that the picture was taken (parallax, etc.), but actually be fine.

That said, I'd want to loupe it to confirm as there are counterfeit crystals with LECs out there.
The fakes typically are surface-etched on the underside, and are not as precise.

Yeah if there was any service paperwork with it to justify it then maybe, but there wasn't. I'd guess it's had a fake replacement glass fitted at some point.

It's a moot point really, as there are far greater concerns with that watch than the crystal.

I agree with your assessment. The crystal might not have been installed oriented perfectly straight. But overall, the watch appears to be original, from what I can discern from the pictures. But as others have stated, first and foremost, always buy the seller.

It depends on the light source and direction. Strong side-lighting (as is the case here) can often make the LEC "pop".
