SLGH005 vs SLGA009

Looking to pick up a white birch as my first GS. Unsure which to get. Kind of want the SLGA009 for the spring drive, but does anyone have any strong feelings towards one or the other?

I think they are both great the dials are a little different. I have the SLGA009, for me a GS needed to be a spring drive.

first grand seiko get the spring drive. The dial isn't as flashy as the 005, but it's the way to go for your first IMO

The Hi-Beat SLGH005 has an accuracy issue, ie. runs too fast. At least mine does (faster by 12-13 spd even after servicing in Japan) and it has been reported by others as well. Unless you don’t mind this. Another plus for SLGH005 is its beautiful movement.

Haven’t seen the Spring Drive version in person but it does look rather subdued appearance-wise, both front and back, compared to SLGH005. Hence if you prefer a more subdued look like the Snowflake, go for SLGA009. Otherwise choose SLGH005 for a more stunning look, leaving aside the issue of accuracy.

Thanks for the responses. I'll go with my original gut feeling and hold out for the SLGA009. My local dealer is all out for now

I prefer the 005 over the 009. The dial texture is more pronounced and looks great. The movement is well finished and decorated. Overall the 005 is a notch higher than the 009 IMHO. I would even wait and consider the green birch.

Interesting take. Other than the dial texture, any other reason you would consider it a notch higher? I prefer the subtle look of the 009 myself.

The movement, when I compare the 80hr high beat movements vs. Spring drive, I always incline towards the HB movement due to the look/finish and soul vs. The "hybrid /electrified" spring drive movement that doesn't look good at all to me.

I heard anecdotally that the accuracy issue has been fixed or at least improved for pieces coming out of the factory now. I got mine a month and it was about 5 seconds fast per day, but as I've continued to wear it, and the movement "breaks in" it has improved to about +2 seconds per day. May or may not be worth noting that it has always been dead accurate for the 12ish hours a day that I wear it, and speeds up as it sits static, face up in the box.

Definitely get the original it’s got the more striking dial. The spring drive version is a wanna be snowflake and there are much better spring drive options out there.

It's a close call. I too was trying to decide between these two, spending a long time comparing them under natural light. In the end, the "flashiness" of the Hibeat dial won me over.

Dope pic Ben. As far as the accuracy issue if the watch is left static it runs fast. If you wear it and keep it fully wound (you know. Like you’re supposed to) it’s within specs or better. Think mine is +1 or 2. But if I let it sit around it’s a little fast. Nothing crazy. Just like 5-10

I haven't check the accuracy that closely but I believe there is no significant variation.

Since we are on the Hibeat, might as well post some more pics

And the dial can reflects and takes on the surrounding lighting. This one below turns to a new tiffany blue.

I also opted for the 005. The dial is more special.

I got the 009. For what will probably be the only GS in my collection, it had to be a Spring Drive. While I do like the texture of the 005 dial, I prefer the more white color on the 009 compared to the silver on the 005.
