From your direct experience, in what ways is 316 steel different from 904 steel? Hardness, workability, etc. BTW, love your photos. Thanks.

So 316 and 316l are different I haven’t machine 316l which has less carbon than 316ss. 316ss is tough. It’s gummy and he’s a lot of chromium and molybdenum that make it’s tough on tools. Have to use carb em coating with variable flute geometry to ward of chatter.
Moving to 904l you have to change you speeds and feed by about 20%. It’s not that drastic but it’s something you have to watch your tool life and get frequently change tools out.
Stainless isn’t hard. There only certain stainless you can harden 440c to be one that we machine then heat treat.
I know I’m making it sound easy and to take a chuck of either material home and try and drill it in a drill press you will smoke every drill you have. Once you figure out your chip loads it’s not a hassle.

Thanks a lot and great question!!

What a great shot. Never got to hike in Arizona. Spend some time hiking Utah out by monument mountain.

Man I took Machine shop in high school back in 92 for 4 yrs. I learned how to use a
3 Jaw, 4 Jaw lathe, a mill and a CNC and I kick myself now for not pursuing the trade when I graduated.

That’s exactly how I started. The shop I’m in now I worked part time my senior year and started full time the Monday after graduation. Been here ever since.
I grew up playing in my grandfathers basement. He’s still to this day has a Bridgeport a lathe surface grinder welding table with a tig and mig. We built my own go kart and mini bike when I was a kid. That’s what sealed the deal for me along long time ago.

My wife love the black dial. If I get a chance to get another it will be a black dial for her. I have a few black dial and a few blue I always wanted white and I’m glad it’s this one.
