Putting a PM Daytona away for 20 years...

How many can people can afford to turn a PM Daytona into a "Safe Queen" for 20 years. AND resist strapping it on your wrist?

That's my goal!

Of course in 20 years said Queen, will be a gift, to my first born Grandchild, not the investment aspect.

Sounds like a nice idea in theory. Hopefully the kid gives a damn about watches, particularly Rolexes and more particularly Daytonas. Seems like a lot of money spent in the hopes he does.

If he does like watches, chances are it will mean more if he identifies the watch with you from seeing you wear it.

Not even once, did I pull it over my hand since it arrived over 15 months ago! My safe isn’t easily accessible which helps me from gazing too!

Good reply but my retirement accounts real estate and random other investments are for making money, I’m all good there! But how many can say My Geandfather had the means to keep one BNIB?

I’m very lucky to own several Rolexes, worn daily. These are “mine”. This Daytona is for the lucky child from my child! Who’s saying it’s a boy? lol 😂

If you focussed on becoming a celebrity or someone in the public eye you could add more value than stickers ever could.

I think I’d rather wear it. Look at the oak collection; watches are classed as, as new or new old stock. I’ve had the pleasure of viewing these watches up close and they have scratches, they’ve been worn a little.

It’s a gamble. It’s quite possible (likely?) unknown grandchild might have no use for it and immediately sell it.

If you really want to give your grandkid something prehistoric, maybe an actual dinosaur fossil or a meteorite dial Daytona?

Hmm I don’t know if you’re grandchild will share the sentiment of “my grandfather was able to afford to keep this brand new in box” and in the same way that you see it - in 20 years it will just be an old (but new) watch. I would guess he would want the latest and greatest as most do these days.

If I were going down that route I would give him my watch that’s he’s actually seen me wearing over the last 20 years - I think that would be more sentimental.

Regardless it’s your decision to make and I’m sure he won’t turn his nose up at it. It’s nice to do nice things for people regardless :)

$45k over 20 years…. Surely you would do better investing the money! I agree! When 20 years comes, tell grandson to buy whatever he wants (within reason) :)

I think it means more to you to be able to put it away than it’ll ever mean to your Grandchild. If history is any indicator I think it shows that progeny never appreciates wealth they didn’t earn.

Notice the “waiver” in my original post then compare it to these replies…… Almost everyone’s redirected the conversation to investments…..

If my grandfather handed me a 20 year old Rolex no matter the preference I’d be way more than stoked!!!!!

But this is not ever going to happen, my grandparents who were of minor means made me who I am.

I can with certainty guarantee a Rolex will be just as revered in 20 years as they are today!

Another passion of mine is Corvettes. I’ve owned, restored from ground up and driven them thousands of miles. Earning the highest awards on the planet. I am very lucky to have found a very low mileage (17,300 at purchase) ‘71 Big Block 4 sp. As I pulled away from the seller I turned and said, “ no one will see this car for sale in the next 20 years.” Now some 18 years later with a total of 18,500 miles on it, I’ve almost made my goal!

Agree..... I have 7 grandchildren, and there will probably be some great grandchildren in a few years.

So far they are all more interested in a new cell phone rather than a wrist watch, which none of them wear.

Don, good to see you back however I completely disagree with your premise.

You believe that the grandchild would be impressed that you could simply put an object away and not use it. Value aside I am not sure I understand.

Secondly even if your investments are fine, this seems like an excessibve waste of capital and time just to impress someone who may not care.

A time keeping instrument should be used for timekeeping.
