Rolex Service seems to change them automatically with every overhaul. If you change the gaskets, do you only REALLY need to change the threaded tube if the threads are not stripped or cross-threaded?

No, as long as the crown & tube pass a water resistance test, they are good to go. I just recently acquired a Sub from from 1970 that still had the original crown & tube, I opted to change to a new crown & tube as I like my watches water tight.

The tubes are not all that expensive and yes at service they are normally changed better to be safe than sorry.

It just makes sense to replace the tube when the watch is open and apart during a regular service.

You may never have a stripped or broken tube, but it would be a shame to have one six months after service. At that point the tube replacement will become very expensive (and inconvenient.)
