BB58 - No Discounts?

So....I've kind of been bitten, albeit years late, by the Blue BB58 bug. I don't know why, but all of a sudden it seems like a good idea for this summer, where I didn't pay the watch much attention during the over-caffeinated hype time.

I was pretty shocked that the AD, one I don't know that well but was interested in dealing more with for geographic reasons, told me that there would not be a discount, due to demand. I am sure that an AD, albeit one with whom I have more experience, quoted me a discounted price last Christmas.

Has the Tudor market really shifted - or am I just having an AD-specific conversation.

Literally every brand says there's no discounts now....Even though I just got 10% off my new Speedy Pro. I was watch shopping with my brother on a work trip to San Antonio recently and walked into a Rolex/Tudor boutique and they had two blue Black Bay 58's sitting in the case. They were really nice and quite affordable for what you are getting. I asked the lady what kind of a discount I could get if I bought both of them. She said with a straight face "I can't give a discount because these will both be sold today....but if you buy them both I'll keep you in mind for a Rolex if someone who ordered one declines it."

I was probably going to buy them both regardless of a discount or not, but her answer was so insulting I just laughed and said "yeah, no thanks" and left the store. That was the most ridiculous response I've ever heard.

Other brands may be offered with discounts.

I have a friend who, a few months ago, got a discount on a new Omega Seamaster 007 edition and the same AD said I could get a discount on a Cartier for my wife (I didn’t buy one).

A 2% discount if paid in cash instead of card based on my experience from one of the ADs. Rest of them offer no discount regardless cash or card.

This just shocks me. I am a low volume buyer - particularly as compared to this forum. But, even minuscule me was offered some pretty substantial discounts on Omegas in recent weeks and Panerais ( one of my favs ) a few months ago. I hadn't really thought it had all shifted so fast. My own sense had been the market is cooling...but what do I know....

So, I can feel good about paying full boat on a BB58 Blue - even though that watch is readily available, everywhere? The amount of money at this level wasn't troubling me as much as the ....well...you know....

Buy from a grey. You'll save a few hundred and the sales tax.

I'm near Toronto and there has been a BB58 shortage here this year. Got my blue w/bracelet a few weeks ago after a three month wait. The SA told me Tudor was having distribution issues, although that was likely limited to my area. No discount.

It’s not readily available in Poland, Europe. The wait time is > 1,5 year.

We picked up a BB 32 for my wife a few weeks ago and no discount. This from an AD we have a very close relationship with…we did get 10% off her Nomos in January but that’s about it…

Interesting. I thought it’s only the Polish case with just 1 AD (although with a handful of boutiques) selling Tudors in Poland (so probably treated very low profile by the Rolex Group).

I don't think so. Not yet, at least.

I routinely see them on display, in my neck of the woods.

Unless you’re building spend history with an AD, you’re better off getting one preowned/gray.

You can probably get one of these for $3k or very close from a trusted grey dealer.

People say that there are no discounts but it depends on the watch you’re seeking. For instance, I always (or almost) buy a summer beater in late may or early june and do the rounds of searching for heavily discounted timepieces. Here are a few recent examples of my annual beater hunt:

2019 - Ω Speedmaster 1957 Broad Arrow 6k retail/discount price 3.2k
2020 - no purchase covid/no travel
2021 - Daniel Roth Endurer Chronosprint 16.5k retail/discount price 4.9k
2022 - Montblanc TimeWalker Chrono 41 5.2k retail/discount price 1.7k

All the above watches were BNIB with full warranty paperwork

Yea, I just don’t think it’s worth paying msrp for a Tudor unless you really are one of those folks trying to get your spend up at an AD (which is ridiculous/has varying rates of success).

Most of them can be found secondhand for much less. The hot models are the only ones, but if you wait a few more months I’m sure you could save. The only one I’ve really seen consistently above msrp on secondary is the FXD. Apparently not many of those around as of yet. I want one. But I’ll wait a bit.

I don't know about 'much less' but suppose that depends on where you live. New BB58s w/bracelet cost $4,430 CDN plus tax. I see them grey for $4,000 - $4,200 up here and sell rather quickly. The odd one is listed for $3,800 or $3,900 and goes right away. When you factor in sales tax to that $4,430, works out to $5,005 where I live, then I suppose it is much less but I would rather (and did) spend $5,000 for brand new vs. $4,000 for second hand.

I have been on "wait lists" from several AD's for months waiting on a Black Bay. While I have no confidence that I'm actually on any list, I also have not seen too many Tudors sitting on any shelves. So I'd be surprised if they were offering discounts on watches they can't keep in stock.
