Laser etched crown question

Dear friends.
I have a question:
I bought this watch from my AD two weeks ago for my wife.
It´s a Midsize Datejust 278274, (31mm).
Isn´t there supposed to be the laser etched crown inside the watch glass (at 6´clock) on this model?
I am aware that it is difficult to spot the crown, and you need to find it under different lighting and agle. I know how to spot it, but, cant find it. I´ve even tried ultraviolet light).
Before I ask my AD, I thought I´d ask you this question.

You should be able to see it - as hard as it may be.

There are times i 100% can’t see even though I know I’ve seen it before.

Try issuing your iPhone/ smartphone camera to slowly zoom in. It’s hard to see. I assume it’s printed/etched on these models like the others!?

It would definitely be on this model. Try taking it outside and look through magnification as you move the watch around. Or try using a LED flashlight. It's there and it will appear to float as you move the watch. It's a crown made of a series of dots in the crystal.

On my Air King the crown is etched on the outside of the crystal. It is difficult to see at the best of times, so if you are focussing/concentrating on the inside of the crystal that might cause you to miss it.

I think the laser etched crown is somewhat difficult to see because directly below it is the hour marker and the words "Swiss Made" (with the coronet in between).

I have found that the best way to see it is to hold a flashlight at the 12:00 position, level with the watch. Then use a loupe or magnifying glass (or the magnifier thingy on an iPhone) to look at the area where the laser etched crown should be. Also, although the laser etched crown is supposed to be at the 6:00 position, it is not unheard of for it to be located in a different position.

+1. Flashlight on the phone usually does the trick.

FWIW I saw on youtube where one of the grey dealers polish guy sent a GMT to RSC to get crystal replaced and it came back with a crystal that did not have the laser etched crown.

find the brightest flashlight, shine it at an angle. The use your phone to take a phone. Then zoom in.

Do you have an iPhone 13 pro? If so the macro lens makes easy work of finding it

This is exactly how I see mine, I would just add to do this method in a darkened room

To have a better chance at seeing it, you definitely need a loupe. It is not that easy to see without one.

As others have suggested, angling a light source separately in that area while viewing through a loupe should help with visibility.

Have you tried using a laser pointer? That worked best for me. Shine the laser pointer around the six position, angle it a bit, the crown should light up. With this method, you may not even need a loupe.

If you bought your watch from a official Rolex AD why even bother to look for it,as it will be there but many times hard to see Rolex ADs only sell genuine Rolex watches..

If it is etched on the outside of the crystal Stan I would be very concerned.

All good points. I'd just add that the only way the crown could not be at 6 o'clock is on a non date model. Otherwise, the cyclops wouldn't line up with the date if the crown was not at the 6.

Get a loupe with a light built in off of amazon for $10 bucks. Will make finding it infinitely easier. But since you bought it from an AD, it'll def be there.

For a watch that size you will need good light and magnification. The crown isn't always in the same place but it will be somewhere down around six.

As said above, if it's a new Rolex bought from a Rolex AD, there is no need to look for it. It will be there whether you can see it or not.

hold the flashlight from your phone directly on the glass at the 12 o clock position, the etched crown on the glass at the 6 o clock position should be easy to see at this point. always works for me. If you bought from an AD then its definitely on there

The etched-in crowns are especially hard to spot on smaller ladies pieces. Why do you question its authenticity if you bought this watch at an AD?

Mine is a 28mm Lady Datejust, and I can see the laser etched crown when I shine a light as I described in an earlier response. My watch was purchased at an AD so there is no question as to the authenticity. It's just fun to be able to see that laser etched crown.

I never thought to look for the crowns on my watches so I just looked at some photos I had to see if I could detect one. Here’s what I found , barely detectable on my 116500.
