I carry two watches with similar functionality when I travel; one is my 16710 GMT II, and the other is my US$199 Timex beater. Which one I wear at any given time and place depends on my sense of situational awareness. Before I retired twenty years ago, I spent about half my time traveling all over the world and wore my 1675 GMT everywhere without any hesitation.

Times have changed.

Since I don't generally cross time zones it's really not much of an issue. Wore bluesy on the keys, fwiw.

My Seadweller is never off my wrist except when I'm sleeping. I've travelled the world wearing this watch, in a physically demanding job and it's stood up to everything I've thrown at it.
Recently had it serviced and a good polish. To be fair, it needed it after almost twenty years of technical neglect and it's last service!
It may have lost some of it's 'character' but I know where it's been and what it's done...and that's enough for me.
Cheers
Rob

I’m off to Australia next month and I will, as usual, bring my BLRO, my Daytona and one PM, this time probably my YG Sub. I also bring one of my dive watches (St. moritz) on a Velcro strap as my decoy watch. Im older so I don’t go out partying in questionable venues, don’t get hammered (as I did in my early years), and try to be aware of my surroundings. Sure it can still happen, but staying vigilant does make a difference. This goes for anyone with any “lustable” items, not just Rolex.

Nobody get hurt? Are you kidding me? People are getting beaten, stabbed and even sometimes killed for their luxury watch. Open your eyes!

I think a lot of people here don’t understand what’s happening nowadays. There are people that target luxury watches and it’s their full time job. They sometimes work with accomplices that spot your watch at a restaurant / bar / mall / club wherever and tell their thief’s friends. So first of all it doesn’t only happen to shady places but you can get your watch spotted by a hotel staff, a waiter at a restaurant, a barman, Uber driver so basically anywhere. And you need to understand that people who want to steal your watch never ask gently. They beat you, stab you, uses machette or guns. All the people saying it’s safe and live your life you are completely unaware and gives dangerous advice.

Didn’t a guy and his partner just get pistol whipped in LA not so long ago? For his watch?

I don't think cops care.

Look at crime stats for the formerly-great city of Chicago. It's not about Rolex envy...

I wear them anywhere and everywhere I go. Now I don’t go clubbing at 2 am in a developing country, but during normal hours virtually anywhere you would actually want to travel, yeah, I’m wearing whatever I want. Life is too short to live in fear.

I mean, there are terrible stories about doing anything, anywhere. If you just focus on whatever sensational story is reported, you’d never leave your house.

Just so some of you know. People getting robbed isn’t some new trend that just started recently.

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-...276-story.html

I thought that was common sense but I could be wrong…

Have you not seen the videos recently of people getting robbed.

They're not exaggerated anything, they're surveillance videos of the crimes. It'll make you sick.

I whole heartedly agree with this. However, if your life is in danger and you can avoid injury (or worse) by giving up your watch, do it and forget that you took a self defense class.

I agree. It's just a watch. But being trained in hand to hand combat not only gives you the ability to confront your watch thief opponent if necessary, but it gives you the mental confidence not to be scared of every waiter, uber driver and subway rider.

Keep in mind where you are asking these questions.. of course Rolex enthusiasts are not going to largely agree about their watches putting a target on them

Check out this IG account(watch_crime_ldn) which documents just some of the London watch robberies

I don't know about the U.S, But when someone who have beautiful watches travel to European , especially some of the biggest City there like London, Paris, Madrid, Milan... People always say don't wear nice watches on the street... Because the thief always there waiting for expensive watches.

I mean those countries are the most developed in the world, not some place like India, Iraq... And still cannot stop the thief? Can someone who live in those countries confirm if those warning is true or not?

Maybe Rolex should invent some anti-thief Bracelet? because their watches is so popular/eyes-catching that can be seen by thief from far distance?

This is true, they are only to wear around the house and to friends parties. Can you imagine of you had an AP or Patek Philippe?

Omegas and IWC's are for going out and traveling

I appreciate the issues with wearing high value watches in built up areas, however, common sense prevails. I have worn my watches in multiple European capitals and just been sensible when wearing. Don't intentionally flash it about and be aware of your surroundings. Most people won't even realise it's an expensive watch on your wrist unless they are a WIS. Ensure it's insured and worst case scenario hand it over should the dreaded event occur. Just my 2 cents.

Worst case scenario hand it over? Do you think they ask your watch politely? Look at my previous post with pictures.

to answer OP's question

yes Europe is safe for luxury watches, wear mine everyday

but those well known hot spots for robbers (London) and thieves (cities in the South like Barca and Milan) need to be taken seriously, especially if you are a tourist and don't know the city

LA crime map. Stay away from the high crime places and there's no issue. Follow the same advice with any large city.

And of course neighboring Orange County is safer still - don't even need to stay "in" LA itself.
Your post is crazy close to the one and only time I was in LA. Stayed on property at Disneyland and went down to Hollywood and walked around, had lunch, caught a movie at the Cinerama Dome and then the next morning took Uber out to the Queen Mary while waiting for the rest of my party to arrive so we could actually do Disneyland. Never felt unsafe at all, though admittedly this was in the fall before Covid.

Not sure how it's degraded now.

I'm driving down to Disneyworld in a few weeks and planning on taking a Rolex with me but it will be secure in the trunk during the driving portion. Planning on wearing a Vostok Amphibia on travel days.

This type of crime isn’t new, but any recent spike likely has a few major causes. First, the jump in luxury watch prices and second, (maybe more important) the social media coverage of luxury watches. Maybe more than ever there is general knowledge that certain watches equal large sums of money.

Leaving the house with an aquanaut is equivalent to having $80k in cash strapped to your wrist for some. I’m not running at that level but have certainly had people I know ask me how much my Rolex costs. I usually low ball it to avoid any further conversation, but have to imagine an enterprising thief certainly has internet access and knows what a BLRO runs there days.

The other point is, while there are brutal examples out there, the overall numbers given the supply of these watches is exceedingly rare. I’d suggest that we may as well be posting car accident photos as those are likely more relevant in terms of probability of occurrence.

Be safe.

Cops aren't the issue. District attornys are the problem. They don't prosecute and judges let people walk without bail.
