What are the odds?

Got news today that the only AD salesperson I feel I had a chance with just left and a new salesperson replaced them. I talked to the new guy on the phone and I'm definitely not clicking as well as with the old salesperson.

At this point, I'm pretty discouraged on getting it retail.

Here is my question: With zero purchase history at the AD, do I have a snowballs chance in hell of getting my watch (Datejust, 36mm, silver dial, fluted, jubilee)? If so, I'll just spend the extra $2000 and get it grey. However if there's a good chance this would come in the next 12 months or so, I would rather just wait as I'm not in a huge rush.

From what I've seen on this forum, some people get this watch in days, others have been waiting for years.

That watch should not be terribly difficult to get - 4-6 months max would be my guess.

So ask the specifically and decide. Great watch at msrp. Not above msrp.

DJ is definitely easier than most. Expect 4-12 month wait. Stop in the store and do a face 2 face and go over your wishlist. After that drop by periodically and say hi.

ADs say these are rare and they don’t get many. Perhaps be flexible on dial, bezel and bracelet to get a watch. Waiting on an exact configuration could take a while.
Been waiting two years on the same watch on an Oyster.

You should be able to get that OP.

But I'd just go ahead and buy grey, avoid the humiliating months of Holiday cards, tequila tastings and turning down countless Omegas/Tudors and other "calls" you'll get in the meantime. ("Hey - we have a Black Bay for you!")

A 36mm datejust shouldn’t be too hard to get. Just keep in contact

Don't be too discouraged, the new salesperson may not have a lot of other buyers he already has relationships with. If you can work on building up the rapport even if you didn't click initially, you can become one of his first customers at the store. Especially since you aren't one of long line of people asking for sport models.

DJ at 10% above isn't too bad. Anymore than that I'd pass

As mentioned it should be easier than sports models but no one knows Jack about Rolex

My purchases from local ADs include DJ36 & YM37. Still not even a hint of SS possibility. (More calls than I can think of for various TT options, Omegas, Tudors... ADs know exactly what pieces provide leverage to coerce purchase of unwanted items)

You will get it at retail. Go in and “place an order.” If they are not taking orders on DJ36s, Place your name on list. It won’t be too long.

Visit the AD and introduce yourself the to the SA and talk about what you want.

Don't put the guy under any pressure. You said that you're not in a hurry.

Just have a neighborly chat about what he's selling and what you want.

I personally wouldn't go gray, but that's just me.

DJ are pretty easy to get. Shouldn't have to wait very long. They don't fly off the shelves.

Remember..

A brand new SA will be trying to fill his/her new mental rolodex as well. Maybe an opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

I'd wait on that particular reference, give em' shot.

They made me buy a DJ41 to get a GMT two years ago. They should be offering a 36 at a discount as far as I'm concerned.

Get off the phone, go in and speak to the SA in person, be direct, be specific and tell him you're not in the mood for any BS, "can you get this for me or not?"

Give him 60 days, then you go gray, get exactly what you want, wear it this weekend, preserve your dignity

They can't make you buy anything.

DJ should be an easy one. A few years ago I got one in weeks as a first purchase. Now I have some history with the AD, but I'm still on the waitlist for more than 6 months as I'm waiting for the green DJ, which is quite difficult to get nowadays. Silver should be a couple months max. However, in my country I have to visit the AD at least once in every three months to take me seriously. Waiting for the call is absolutely not enough here. :)

I got this with zero purchase history, walking into a random AD on vacation, building some report over an hour, and waiting about 18 months on the list and then boom, got the call. DJ should be loosening up, in my view.

Same thing happened to me. AD "forgot" about all my previous purchases after the SA left. "Sorry sir, you'll need to re-register your interest!"

I've been hearing that for .... years. The call never comes.

Anyway, OP, go ahead and buy grey. These dealers are in this business to maximize their profit, just as they should be. You will end up paying Market Price for that watch one way or another. You must decide whether you will tear off the band-aid and be wearing that LNIB watch tomorrow at 10AM or if you'll join the end of the mythical queue at the AD.

Let the new SA exactly what you want and ask what the expected time frame is. You should be able to get that watch. Nice watch at MSRP.

I expressed interest in this DJ36 around 18 months ago. I will not buy on secondary as it's a datejust! I doubt there is a lineup of people for this watch, in fact I was told there is no one else "ahead" of me fwiw. I don't think anyone here can tell you if it's going to be weeks or months, perhaps try asking your SA how many of that configuration they have seen in the last year.
