Worthy companion to my Datograph.

I have a Datograph. It took me two years of waffling before taking the plunge in summer of '21. It is my grail and a prized possession. I wish I could wear it everyday. However, my normal daily routine consists of cycling to and from the office, and changing lots of diapers and giving baths to the babies.

Not really the lifestyle for wearing the Dato often. What is the worthy companion? For those of you who will say Odysseus, please don't. It's not attainable at a reasonable premium.

Presume you mean another Lange?

Clearly that would be the Odysseus but if that's not a player in this they don't really have another sporty watch to match lifestyle where the dato won't fit

Does not need to be another Lange, as it likely needs to be a sports watch. Just not sure which. I was gravitating to the 5712 but I think it might not be "tough" enough.

Two great options, but how is a 5712 easier to obtain than an Odysseus?

Vacheron chrono is a good choice
Also, there's a cory richards version for sale now at EWC that is sweet.

I mean there's a million sports watches out there man...I like the VC route

Fair point. I think I can stomach the premium a bit more easily.

I second a Vacheron Overseas. The easy changing strap system will give you even more flexible.

Depends on your wrist size and how they fit, you might want to consider the 3 hander or the Dual Time. Not much premium in the secondary market now, and if you’re not targeting the Blue dial, you can probably get one from the Boutique or an AD with some wait.

There’s a larger premium on a 5712 than an Odysseus. You can land the WG BNIB around 55k. I’ve seen the SS around 60-65 pre owned. I’m guessing it will be going lower as the 15202 is down in the 60s already.

What about stating the obvious - if you want a chrono - get a Daytona!! Other chrono options include a PF Tonda GT Chrono.
Non-chrono - have to include the Odysseus. Prices coming down every week. If you bought the Dato at a boutique then you're already a potential Odysseus customer - might need to buy another Lange too but in this day and age, you could sell the Lange 1 or whatever was required with only a little hit - far less damage than the grey Odysseus premium.
Other cool sports watches - Blancpain, FPJ Octa Sport (cheaper than a 5712), Laurent Ferrier Sport a cool option, Bulgari Octa Finnisimo, don't forget the Aquanaut - looks sportier on the steel bracelet IMHO.

Just wear the DATO. I don't see any issue with cycling or changing diapers. It's a watch which is meant to be worn. If it breaks, just fix it.

15202 is in the 60s with box and paper for recent years? Maybe it is time to think about it.

If you have read garyg article on how they fixed up a banged up Lange for him, you probably wouldn’t worry too much.

If it is back in the high 50/low 60, it would be tempting to get one to complete my "Holy Trinity"

I triple the vote for VC overseas.

I go hiking with my Dato all the time… just make sure you change the strap…but yeah I don’t do dishes with it and probably wouldn’t ride my bike with it as I am not a confident rider.

Nothing beats Rolies as sports watch. For 10 to 15k, u get the most robust and horologically significant watch. I use mine spanning sauna to surfing to horse back riding with no visible signs of wear. Most of the suggested alternatives (particularly VC with metal bezel) would have developed vintage look by now…,

This was my first thought too. OP do you have any parameters - budget? Size of watch? Rubber vs bracelet? Etc...

The overseas is a great choice but if this is a beater you wanted to spend less on think an Omega fits the bill, or can look at a SeaQ or if you wanted something classier that can do it all my personal favorite the Breguet Marine 5817 - I wear mine to the gym pretty often.
