Collection Advice

Posting for a friend to get a broader opinion:

The image below represents a series of timepieces that my friend either has, or is looking to acquire.

We often have discussions about the ideal collection, and in my opinion, there is definitely some redundancy in his dream watch collection.

For example, I feel he can loose a GMT and the OP / Exp.

I know people say buy and collect what you like but in an effort to be practical and trim down the collection, he has asked me to post and ask for opinions on what would should be eliminated.

I do know that the BLRO and Submariner (no date) are keepers for him.

Thanks to all for your input and Merry Christmas !

Switch the Exp1 to the 36mm version. Keep the BLRO and the sub. Ditch the LV, CHNR, BLNR and OP. Keep the DJ, but my preference is two tone. With the $40-60k I just saved you, buy a Patek.

Any reason your friend could not post here and get his question answered directly?

Just point and click...

+1 Basically agree with this post, except don't include the Exp (this is slightly redundant with Sub); Sub + BLRO + DJ is quite representative and versatile for a streamlined Rolex collection. Then use the remaining funds to diversify beyond the brand (only other Rolex that might make the trio more representative would be a Daytona).

This is fantastic option. I guess there is redundancy in the green line up.

Thank you.

Not sure. He asked me to do it for him and why not, no skin off my back and I’m helping a friend.

He should send me his collection and after careful consideration I'll send him back what he needs.

I’m confused … which ones does he actually own?

If he has yet to acquire some of them then it’s a just a guessing game.

it's a beautiful collection

but if your friends's goal is to consolidate+level up, then i'd remove the OP and the Explorer (as you suggested yourself), and later replace them with a new "grail" piece (e.g. Daytona)

I’d keep the OP, DJ, both subs and the BLRO.

Not really. Assuming you have the cash you can go grey today and get them all.

The ask is to help identify redundancy or provide opinion on what to eliminate

I’d keep sub and BLRO, trade everything else, pick up a yellow gold day date, call it quits

Personally, I agree with the comment on Explorer 36 being a better choice (though understand the desire to keep a discontinued reference). Same reason I'd let go of mint 41 (proportions on DJ41 just off IMO). BLNR and LV probably have too much redundancy. What to go for all depends on what they want to add in terms of metal choices: keep it mostly steel, more TT, or add a PM.

Personally, I'd probably go for:

Exp. 39 -> Exp. 36
DJ41 mint -> DJ36 fluted/Jubilee, silver dial

And then put BLNR/LV (and maybe some $$) towards a combination of:

YM40 blue dial
YM37 OF/black dial (think this size works better for OP, but could do 40)
TT Explorer I (if keeping 39)
DD36 WG/white dial (subtle)
DD36 YG/white sticks (not so subtle)
OP36 silver (YG markers make it a lot less redundant than it sounds)

I would keep 3 (exp, sub, gmt) and start looking at other brands. Seems like they are either really indecisive (3 modern GMTs in a relatively small collection) or trying to own the modern Rolex SS collection… if that’s his goal then more power to ‘em.

Keep big four. Rootbeer, Pepsi, Sub LV, and Sub at least. Add a Daytona or one high horology in place of other 4.

^^^^This.

Plus I would add a Chronograph - AP ROC. It would give you some breadth, and sit alongside the YG DD in the "very special" category.

Submariner, Datejust, Explorer, GMT BLRO. Add a Daytona and you'll have all what I consider the mid-twentieth century icons.

Personally, I would keep the exp39 (the near-perfect sport watch in my book), put the BLNR on Oyster, DJ on jubilee, and add a DayDate with white or silver dial for a classic look.

This is a valid point. Relative to everything else they are the most basic watches and probably made redundant by the no date

If it were mine, the only ones I would knock out are in this order:

Explorer
Datejust
OP
Root beer

How can we possibly answer this without knowing what he has or is looking to buy? He might have 2 or 6 or Xx

Kinda of agree, but think the BLNR is a bit bigger four than the root beer.

I do agree there is almost no dial color variety. White and blue are timeless. Great suggestions !

To me the best three watch option is sub gmt and Daytona. I am going for the LV, BLNR and waiting for the SS Daytona. Really only the three models I desire.
