Collection Opinions

Pictured is my current collection which I have put together since late 2019.
I have managed to establish a decent relationship at a couple of ADs, who have treated me well, so all watches have been bought brand new.

I have been trying to think where I want to go next so was looking for some thoughts from the knowledgeable members on here.

I feel I have built up a good base and love all my watches but do feel there is a decent amount of overlap for a smaller collection.

(In the below scenarios I’m assuming buying from AD as I have a realistic chance)

Option 1: Sell the 3 pieces in the top roll (124060, explorer and SMP) and get an OF Daytona

Option 2: hold off, maybe just sell 1 piece (explorer or 124060 sub) when/if I get the SS black Daytona I’m waiting on.

Note: OP was a recent 30th birthday gift from my wife so isn’t sellable.
Pepsi is also a definite keeper.

Apologies for the lengthy post, trying to get the detail in! Haha

Option 1 and 2 both sound good to me. They are both after different things but each outcome could be cool.

I realise none are bad situations.

Suppose what I’m really trying to decide is how my Steel sports is enough.
Been thinking a base 3 piece then maybe a PM OF Daytona could be pretty cool. Smaller collection with some bigger pieces

Keep the GMT, sell one of the Subs (keep the other), and of course the OP. The rest should go to fund something bigger.

GMT
Sub
OP
PM Daytona or...?

I am a very big fan of the 124060. It would be a keeper in my opinion. It is classic and very versatile. Which OF Daytona were you looking at? My favourite is the silver dial WG combination.

Add the Daytona and then decide what to sell.

If you need to sell to be able to buy the Daytona then personally I’d sell the
LVC, the Omega and the Explorer.

That is something I was considering, the explorer was my first Rolex and is amazing to be honest but with having the OP I just feel it’s a bit redundant.

The sub thing is a hard one. Having 2 green is maybe a bit much so head says keep the black sub. But, as the name suggests, hulk was the original watch I wanted. Unfortunately, got discontinued before I managed to get one. However, recently picked up the Kermit so heart says keep that.

Love that one as well. However, thinking if I am going gold maybe should be a colour to add variety of coloured metal.

Like the YG, gold dial, black sun dials. Also love the RG black and pink or RG sundust

It all depends when it comes really. To responsibly add the PM one, any time this year, I’d need to consolidate a bit. Steel one not as much.

I’m at the stage where I need to decide whether to chase down the other steel models I like or focusing on a PM piece would add more to the enjoyment of the collection

Lovely collection !

Submariner and LV combo is perfect in my opinion.

I totally understand the allure of the 39mm explorer, even more so that you have an LV but between the explorer and the submariner which one gets more wrist time ?

If I was to sell off pieces they would be in the relative ease of which you can get them back.

1 SMP 300 - hard to do as the blue is stunning but another diver
2 Explorer 39 - can go grey or get the 36mm or Tudor ranger

Assuming you’re wife lets you wear the OP, I think this is another argument to move the explorer. Between the two, IMO it’s the nicer watch. Some say the bezel is a little bulbous compared to the explorer but I think the green dial is stunning. It’s dynamic and covers all shades of green and appears black in low light.

I see the the other side where if the LV is keeper, why keep the same model (sub) but to me, the sub is the reference amongst dive watches and has a place in every collection.

Would love your thoughts on my points so we can keep chatting

Thanks man. You make some great points!

The OP is mine, she bought it for my 30th. I got her a mint green DJ for hers. It’s a 31mm though so not shareable haha.

I think the explorer will maybe go for the reason of it being too similar. Just not wearing it as much. Only got the LV sub last month so haven’t worn the black sub much since.

Love the combo of my subs but not sure I can justify 2 subs in a small collection. Don’t really want to have more than 6 or 7 watches long term.

Option 1 sounds good. It seems you have an itch for a PM piece. I think the only issue would be the Exp 1 was your first Rolex. I assume there is some sentimental value to it. Can you get the PM and only sell 124060 and the SMP?

I would sell your OP and Explorer and fund towards a Daytona.......for the next route

Current collection: 1) Rolex Submariner(116610LV), 2) Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional(311.30.42.30.01.006), 3) Rolex GMT-Master II(126710BLNR), 4) Breitling B01 Navitimer 43(AB0138211B1A1)

Personally, I would keep the OP from your wife and Pepsi. Flip the rest for an OF RG YM. Then pick up the SS Daytona when it comes in for you. Then I would consider myself done.

I would advise doing nothing and waiting for your SS Daytona. You seem to be rather uncertain about what you want and possibly what you are building a collection for. We're all different. I buy what I like. I don't care if my collections looks right or balanced to someone else.

Your money, your choice.

Option 2 assuming you have reasonable assurance on the SS Daytona.

Have you tried OF Daytona? If not, perhaps worth to check with your ADs if they have exhibition model.

If your ADs cannot get you SS Daytona, then Option 1 assuming you like the OF Daytona and the sell of the 3 pieces does not damage the relationship with the AD.

PS: I was in a similar boat few months back, had 114060 and 116610LV and decided to keep the LV as my diver in the collection.

There are just too many great models in the Rolex range. I find it hard narrowing down which ones I want the most! I’m sure I’m not the only one!

I think I am trying to get some sort of variety from the range. Different bracelets, metals, complications would be the goal.

i would unload the black sub & explorer towards an OF Daytona! (imo the best Daytona variant.)

(in case you miss either in the future, they can be added back with relative ease from AD.)

i'd keep Omega- i love the pop of blue, the ceramic wave dial, and plus- you'll lose $$ trying to sell it. i think it's a perfect complement to the SubLV.

Yeah, I have tried on quite a few OF Daytona I’ve the past year or 2. Really like the dressy but casual vibe as it suits my style.

Great choice! I’d have kept that as well

That was my thoughts as well. Although my explorer is one of the last of the 39mm. 36 is too small for me.

I may keep the omega. I got a 15% discount on it back in 2020 so wouldn’t really loose much on the resale but won’t really add much to the fund.

I would get rid of the explorer and SMP. With your other watches, I would find it nearly impossible to ever reach for those in the rotation, and if I were to do so, I would always be wishing I had either sub or BLRO on my wrist.

After doing that, I would either fund a precious metal, or wait for the Daytona you seem to be in queue for.

Try to see if oyster flex works for you first.

I personally wouldn’t sell a watch to buy a watch. Your AD may frown on that - if you have to sell a watch to afford the next purchase, it doesn’t look great for future spend potential.

The Oysterflex Daytona is my favourite. And with your history a realistic piece to obtain. I have not seen ADs preferentially allocate SS Daytonas to those without a PM purchase or other significant history however. So you may wait a while for the SS or wait for grey prices to come down.

The sub is such a quintessential daily I would keep at least one. Omega and explorer don’t do it for me.

To my mind the top roll has 3 great daily watches in it. I personally think that whatever you do, you need to keep one of them so you can make it your beater. Get an OF Daytona as this may arrive quicker than stainless and then pick up the stainless one if it materialises. You can then be in the enviable position of deciding what Daytona to keep (the answer is both, of course).

Great collection! Personally I’d keep
- Sub
- Pepsi
- OP

Sell the rest and use funds towards the WG Daytona with blue dial. That way you have a great yet focused mix of complications, colours, and bracelets.

Like the YG, gold dial, black sun dials. Also love the RG black and pink or RG sundust

Hard to talk redundancies when the BLRO, Sub and Sub LV are all basically the same when seen from a distance. Even up close same dial, case shape/size (roughly), just different bezel colors (and a GMT hand for one of them I suppose).

Me personally, I’d eliminate the green OP or the sub LV. Neither very versatile, and a surplus of green in the collection would be an issue for me. Given you have 3 divers including a black sub, I’d unload the green LV. Take the profit, move it to something else. This keeps the green OP for sentimental reasons, and keeps the explorer also since it was your first Rolex - you’ll regret selling it. Plus I’m just not a big fan of the green sub so this would be an easy decision for me. If you really want the hulk then trade the green LV and the OP for the Hulk and then carry on.
