I am almost finished with a book called "Left To Tell" by Immaculee Ilibagiza, which tells of her survival during the Rwandan holocaust. I am left speechless by the horror in that account. It's just stunning - I had no idea of the atrocities that happened only 15 years ago.

BTW, this is by no means a political post, and please don't take it as such. Mods, if this is a problem, I apologize in advance.

Hadn't heard of that book, Caroline. Sure sounds like it would tear your heart out though.

That woman's story borders on unfathomable. Incredibly courageous.

If you've not seen "Hotel Rwanda", it's an excellent film about those terrible events.

Yeah - I don't know who cried more tonight - me, or the baby I was babysitting!

Nancy, I'll bet if you google her name, you'd get a brief summary - it's worth a look.

Wow. I may have to rent that.

I feel almost ashamed that I know so little of such a horrific event that happened at the time I was enjoying my own life here in the US. I'm only a couple of years older than Ilibagiza, so it hits home.

Each fall, our diocese (I'm Catholic) has a large regional conference with speakers and activities. This year in September, Immaculee Ilibagiza will be the keynote speaker. I can't wait.

Some of the nicest and hardest workers I've had as clients are African exiles. When you hear their stories of the unthinkable they have lived, it's no wonder they excel and find the U.S. such a great place to live!

We met in Holland in 1990 his name is Benoit N'gurikiye from Kigali- Rwanda, he was studying at the Unesco-IHE Institute for Water Education.
I tried to send him several letters but all were returned "because of war and un-stability in the country"

I remember he showed me photos of his wife and three boys, I just felt I wanted to put his name up here as I never forgot him and still wonder if he and his family are all right...

Agreed. That's a great movie - very scary. Forget Freddy Krueger and Jason, these are the real horror stories.

I heard her speak when she was being promoted by Dr. Wayne Dyer during one of his shows. Her strength of spirit through her ordeal is one of the most amazing and inspiring things I've ever heard.

That's exactly the feeling I got from her book. Despite the crushing atrocities of her circumstances, her strength and spirit leave one with an incredible feeling of hope. "Inspiring" doesn't even do it justice!

Yes, Caroline, "Hotel Rwanda" is a terrific film, quite grotesquely depicting the atrocities that were carried out there during that regime. A must see film that will blow you away!!
