Rolex Explorer Matterhorn Advertisement 1966 (New Yorker)
There was a thread where someone asked for a magazine that featured the 1966 Rolex Explorer Matterhorn advertisement; the advertisement can be found in the October, 8, 1966 New Yorker Magazine.

And a follow up comment: 36mm steel was deemed ideal then and it still is today!

But the "argument" isn't as simple as that. It's not just about the size of the watch case. Take a look at the Explorer in the advertisement. The watchband is wider and more substantial than the bracelet of the current 36mm model, and for precisely that reason the vintage Explorer doesn't appear as diminutive and dainty.

OP - thanks for finding the cool vintage ad.

I bought my 1st Rolex, a 1016 Explorer, in May 1967 for $187, wore it daily for years and along with its complete packaging/documents/ sales receipt is an important part of my collection and now a family heirloom.

The 2nd photo is of it with my 39mm 214270 Mark II. The 36mm 1016 is a great size.
