Asking for opinion on 1680 "imperfect" dial patina
Thank you for accepting me in the forum. I am a new Rolex owner and I acquired a wonderful 1680. Everything is good, just the 8 hour marker is all white and has no yellowish patina whatsoever. I know it has looked this way for +20 years. Have any of you seen an "imperfection" like this before, or do anyone know what can be the reason? To me it only adds to the charm of this beautiful watch. Many thanks in advance for your feedback.
Best, Jens |

Looks quite a bit smaller to me.
Are you sure that the lume has not come off at that point and we are not looking at the white dial plot underneath ?

If there is actually tritium lume on that plot, that's bizarre. Makes more sense that the plot was washed.

It seems to lack texture too.

Doesn't look as if there is tritium on that plot, which would explain the lack of patina and the smaller look.
I'd shine a UV light on the dial. That'll confirm it. |

Yes agree and I suspect it's fallen off! I never usually suggest dial work at all, but a sympathetic single plot relume might be a suggestion.

I was told once this happens because of too much lubrication. Oils getting on dial in places. Do not know if that is true all the time but a very heavy guy in the vintage market informed me of that quite sometime ago. My 2 pennies

Maybe that could work, I wouldn't consider it an alteration as such but rather a repair. I will investigate it, thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
