What other $40k purchases are you close to making while feeling iffy about it? Medium-sized sedan? Bath renovation you don't need? Close to a years worth of tuition?

I'm sorry but it's getting laughable. No sane person should feel on the fence about dropping 40k for an item to get the chance to buy another 14k SS item.

Buy the falling knife grey and get what you want. You're welcome

Ask them for the SS Sub for everyday use, and let them make a relationship with you. If the threat you well tell them that you will come back for a PM piece for your collection later..

The AD better start to get used to a more normal world..

Depends your financial situation - if you are someone who can very easily afford this watch like no big deal at all to you then I say HECK YEAH buy it and its AWESOME!! Friend of mine has one and its very cool. Far better in person than online photos and videos can ever convey!

HOWEVER, do not buy it if you dont really like it or if its a big buy for you. IF you are buying this thinking the AD is suddenly going to give a damn about what else you request and treat you differently then dont go for it .. this watch will not accomplish that for you and furthermore if you can’t easily afford it and are maybe considering getting rid of it rather quickly you’ll be disappointed there too .. you’d Probably only get a trusted dealer to buy that form you for low 30’s.. i other words you’d lose 10 grand or so

But I love the watch and think you should buy it if you love it too !

You're in a difficult position.

You asked for something and they got it for you. Now you don't want it. It would be reasonable for them to thank you politely and press delete.

No-one likes a timewaster.

Conversely - Obviously this watch isn't your prefered option but you're considering buying it anyway to 'build a relationship', despite it being 4 x the cost of the fairly commonplace watch you would prefer to buy. If you go with this and let the dealer know this is what you are doing (as you would have to, otherwise what's the point) they will see you as an open goal and proceed to rinse you for as much as they can.

I would say be honest and reject the PM watch for the simple reason you don't want it. Alternative is you will end up with a ton of worthless junk, and will only get the watch you want when it goes in the case (i.e they have called everyone on their list, fulfilled every passer-by and the safe has no more room)

Best of luck (and btw I really like the WG sub)

PM models are not selling nearly as far above MSRP as they were prior. The speculation / quick flip / chaos boom is over. The fact that you're getting a call for that watch means that there aren't many other people who want it. So only buy it if you want it - and the fact you're asking now means you too are aware that the zero risk/no loss period is over. And you're thinking twice before dropping $40k, just like everyone else who isn't worth $50m.

They could have sold you a sub probably 20 times already in your one year wait. You're not special to them nor are they doing you any "favors". The people saying that on this forum are insane and just drinking the Koolaid. You don't owe them anything. Tell them no thanks and wait patiently until there is some economic pain (or the crowd moves on to another thing). You'll get another chance to buy a watch - it's the mad dash of everyone to buy anything offered for sale that's leading to this "shortage".

Watches don't get consumed like Bourbon - once they're made they exist longer than we do. Subs are barely selling above MSRP at this point....

**Update:Look at Chrono24 - there are multiple 126619LB models selling below MSRP. i.e. after tax you'd take a bath selling to a reseller. The game's over. The AD didn't "get" you anything. A watch was shipped to them, and they want to make a huge profit/commission selling it to you. Your local government will also appreciate the $4-6k in tax revenue.

As others have said, it's a lot to spend for something to stick in a drawer... And it's not appreciating in that time. In fact you're sitting on a loss when you walk out the door.

That loss will likely exceed any premium on a new SS sub from gray market.

I only buy what I can afford and will enjoy... It's not either/or and that'd be my advice.

If you decide to turn it down, be honest with the dealer. If you buy, I'd certainly let them know your wish list for the future.

No No No

You don’t want it. You didn’t go after it. It’s one heck of a first Rolex piece for sure.

Safe…..

No

Wrist - Yes. Don’t buy a watch and then not wear it.

Good luck.

I would never buy a watch and stick it in a box, certainly not a white gold sub that you can buy outside of the AD for less. I would pass, as would most people interested in a SS sub. Wanting a 10k watch and being offered a 40k watch isn’t really something most people would jump at.

Don't do it!

My largest regret in this newfound watch hobby of mine is buying a watch I didn't love. I prefer the SeaDweller over the sub, so I asked for a SS SeaDweller as my 3rd purchase this year and my AD brought out a TT SeaDweller (126603.) I like the watch more than I did initially, but it's my least worn, and least favorite watch. There's not a single occasion I can think of that I would wear it over any of my other Rolexes. And it only goes further down the list as I buy new, exciting watches that I've been waiting for.

This a great piece for daily wear. Flies under the radar as others have said. Downright stealth!

If it wore like a very special watch then I'd splurge on the PM. Problem is that I find it too subdued compared to the last white gold model with blue dial. So I'd pass in your shoes. It's not gonna cost you future watches just be honest with your AD.

Going into this with a plan to buy 10 Rolexes in 10 years is not something I can relate to. It would seem with that strategy, and I assume you have other brands as well, you are buying all sorts of watches you won't wear often so what's one more?

If you expressed interest and have the funds to do so, you should consider the purchase seriously.

You could hold out ; but it may be a while before you get the S/S piece if you haven’t any purchase history.

Please wear it. Don’t just put it in a box.

I really like the watch but it’s not a watch I would like to wear for everyday use.
So my question is, would you guys buy the watch to "get a foot in the door" with the dealer and get the chance to be offered some of the less accessible watches that I’m interested in down the road?

My plan is to acquire and keep 5-10 Rolex watches over the next 10-15 year period. So the WG sub I would probably just put away in a box only using it for special occasions.

All thoughts appreciated.
So, did you buy it?

I wouldn’t buy it based on your comments. No reason to purchase a WG Rolex knowing you’ll keep in a drawer. Personally, it is a beauty buy heavy and scratches easy. Wait for the SS.

Doesn’t sound like the cost is an issue for you and considering you want to build a relationship, I would go ahead and buy the WG Sub. Not a bad plan.

If this watch is one you would get in the collection later and have the funds for, buy it. If this is not really what you want or don't have the funds for now, then tell them you'll wait for what you really want. You told the AD you would consider it. You have considered it, but if I were you, I would think about why you're asking the question here and not running out the door to get it.

Buying something you don’t want, takes away the opportunity from someone who does want it.

Which WG reference do you own or have owned? My 116719 is just as durable as my 126710.

Give it a miss, if it’s not exactly the one you want then reject it. It’s also a watch that sells around MSRP on the grey market so you would lose money if you bought it to flip

I would counter with asking for either a WG GMT, blue or meteorite, or YG sub LB, if the SS LN is not available. I really liked the Smurf, and I might be in the minority, but the new WG sub just doesn’t get me excited. But any gold watch would be a great relationship starter if you have the funds.
