Okay...I need someone to set me straight in my ways. Or tell me I'm not crazy...

I just picked up a V serial SS Daytona for a reasonable discount...and before I have even had the chance to pull the plastic off, I'm considering ditching the watch in favor of the SS GMT IIc. Am I crazy? I know the daytona is for many, the grail watch...and to be quite honest, it does look great. But there is something about the GMT IIc that really draws me to it. And before anyone suggests it, no, I can't have both at the moment. So I must choose 1...therefore, do I:

1) Keep the SS Daytona I just acquired, or
2) part with the Daytona and pick up a SS GMT IIc?

I am torn!?!?!?

If you have the means to buy a Daytona, a GMT IIc in the future should not be a problem.

I'm am looking at a SS daytona, but it will not be my daily wearer.

I think the GMT is a better everyday watch somehow (bezel is non-scratchable etc). Like other posters have said, you'll not have too much of a problem sourcing a GMTIIc at a good price, so I wouldn't rush the decision.

I bought the GMT iic as a stop gap whilst I waited for my SS Daytona.......now off the list........ GMT every time for me, the date in itself is a winner for me

Get the one you want; but if it were me, I'd keep the SS Daytona and save up for the GMT IIC. You should be able easily to find a used GMT IIC or even a new one at a relatively good price later. The Daytona is a different matter. I don't think Daytona prices will go down any lower in the foreseeable future; nor do I think Daytona availability will even come close to that of the GMT IIC anytime soon.

Both are great watches but it depends on which one you like more. In terms of value, it is a significant step down from a Daytona. The Daytona would hold it's value better.

I think it depends on your finacial situation. If you can easily afford it, get both! Otherwise, I'd give it 90 days to get over buyers remorse then consider going after the GMT.

I tried not to bring prices into the decision but I agree 100%.

The Daytona will be the better long term hold, GMT IIc will only be easier to find in the future.

I know what I would do, I wish I could find a SS Daytona let alone one at a discount like the OP.

I've been on the same boat ,and I ended up with a GMTIIc , no regrets all the way so far.

For all the talk about the grail watch status of Daytona, I'm unimpressed. By today's standard they feel really small.

What's worse is the further back you go, the smaller they feel. I got the chance to look at a PN dial model from the 60's two days ago, and it felt incredibly flimsy and the writing on the dial was almost impossible to read from any distance.

I did exactly that. The Daytona looked a bit small for me so went ahead and part exchanged it with gmt IIc. Couldnt be happier

Go with the one that sings to you, daytonas do come by often and eve more so in the current climate. As long as it smiles to you, go for it.

I don't feel you're crazy at all, Cameron.

If you feel the GMT IS the one you really want then flip the Daytona and be happy!

Life is too short to have to be unhappy about something you have total control over isn't it?

In my opinion, (although I do not own one) by looking at it and having it on my wrist for a few minutes, the Daytona is not an everyday watch, but then again it is only my opinion.
As far as the GMT Master 2 it is a fantastic watch and I consider it the ideal everyday watch.

IT DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON YOUR TASTES WHICH WATCH WOULD YOU PUT ON YOUR WRIST AND SAY "THAT WAS MONEY WELL SPENT"?

Yes, I think you're crazy...

I want to emphasize, that whichever watch YOU like best, go for it. If that's the GMT, by all means lose the Daytona, if that's the Day, stick with what you've got, if it's a $14.00 timex, then wear that. It is 100% a persoal decision and I think we all acknowledge that.

But, if the watches are equally desired, and you don't need the date, or the 24 hour hand, then I say you should keep the Day.

The Daytona is the most coveted of Rolexes. A lot of people don't understand why, and some will disagree with me, but it's STILL, (even in these difficult economic times) the most difficult to get, (the SS I'm talking about). Walk in to any average AD and they will have a GMT sitting in the case. The same can not be said for the Daytona. It is UNIQUE among Rolex Watches, and extremely sought after. If you don't like it, or like the GMT more, then none of that means a rat's A**, and you absolutely SHOULD get what YOU like, doesn't matter the popularity. But if that's not the case, then go with the unique and coveted model.

OK, go ahead everyone, lay it on me....

I couldn't agree more with your points above...and the idea of having a watch that is somewhat scarse is a plus...I do like the daytona...I just also like the GMT IIc. For the GMT IIc, everything seems to flow together so well. I like the larger lugs and the ceramic bezel really stands out. The daytona is a little more flashy due to the polished bezel...but it looks great as well. Crap...decisions, decisions.

I think it depends on your wearing habits. For a daily wearer, I'd go with the GMT, but for special occasions the daytona is great. I have both and if you made me choose, I'd pick my daytona. It's unique, special, and while it wears smaller than my GMT IIC, I think it looks better. Just my $0.02

I recently had a choice between a SS Daytona or a SD and cash. I took the SD and the cash and have not looked back. Go for the SS IIC, it's IMHO the best Rolex sports model ever made.
