I had to wait but not like today, and I got a very modest discount, this was in the early 2000's. My first one in 2000. Black dial. Its still one of my favorites, and my travel watch.

There was a waitlist, but it was a true waitlist in the sense they did not have a bunch of Daytona sitting around for you to walk-in and buy. They would order it for you and you might have to wait a few months to a year to get it. You didn't have to play any game with the AD.
But that was also a time that I could walk in a buy a 16710 GMT Master 2 20% off MSRP... |

So I don't know about when the 16520 was being sold by ADs as I only got into rolex in 2012, but for the 116520 In ss I never saw it in any ADs case and I visited ADs all over the country and especially the sfbay area where I lived. If you went grey market either the 116520 or 16520 could be had for about $10-11k(box and papers) up until about 2018 I believe. Then for some strange reason the 16520 started going to the moon in price and then the 116520 followed.
