Rolex spotting in Germany..

Being a WIS, I look at everyone’s wrist, I can’t help it.

I’m on a break in Germany just now and have been Rolex spotting.. or not! After a walk in the suburbs over the last few days I have seen only 1 Rolex. My wife (German) says nobody is interested in watches here.. I think I believe her. Everyone has a smart watch, no watch or an (ugly to me) cheap thing on their wrist.

Any Germans on the forum here?

Depends where you are. The top salary cities like Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Cologne will def. have you spot a significant amount of luxury watches.

I go to Germany a lot for work - nearly every other week. Mostly Munich and Frankfurt. Zillions of Rolexes.

Germany is one of the spiritual homes of engineering & manufacturing and home to a lot of watch houses. Of course they like watches!

There is a good forum in Germany with lots of active members.
Having lived there it really depends where you go but certainly a lot of Rolex wearers

I see one rearly in the wild in the Netherlands too. At Schiphol on the other hand, i see lots of them. Germany i don’t know but they do have an active forum. The netherlands have a rolexforum too but that is not active anymore.

I believe the Germany is most developed watch market in whole EU. Even when you browse the chrono24 you will see that all the good pieces are usually located in Germany, followed by Italy and Spain perhaps ..

I flew back to Germany yesterday. In my row and the row behind me were: a 36mm Explorer, a 41mm Datejust, a gold Daytona, my Submariner, my girlfriend's Datejust. While standing in line to board I spotted a 41mm AP Royal Oak chrononograph and a two-tone Daytona as well as several women wearing Datejusts. All of these people were Germans -- except for me.

My "sightings" yesterday may not be completely representative of a normal day in Germany, but in my experience it is not accurate to say that Germans aren't interested in luxury watches; I see Germans wearing them all of time.

Wetzler, Seligenstadt, Budingen aren’t large and aren’t all that fashionable. Seligenstadt is a cute tourism town along with Budingen, Wetzlar has Zeiss and is more manufacturing. I live near Budingen BTW. You will need to get into Frankfurt to see watches plus Sinn watches are made there.

I grew up in Nuremberg, Germany but live in Dallas, TX now. But I agree, my fellow Germans, family, and friends prefer much more modest watch brands and jewelry. Much different here in the US. So I adjusted :)

You've been to two cities with ~20k inhabitants and wonder why you don't see a ton of Rolexes? How many do you see in a suburb of Harrisburg PA??!?

Go to a real city in Germany (Hamburg / Munich / Dusseldorf / Frankfurt) and you can't walk 500yds without seeing 2-3 Rolexes. In fact I was at the BMW Open in Munich last week and you couldnt get away from the Subs, to the point where I was completely turned off by the amount of Rolex watches...

Didn't watchmaking start in Germany. There are a lot of independent watch companies in Germany, probably the most in any country.

Yes, this is certainly true. And the Germans do wear (and drive) their own products Made in Germany quite a lot. But the OP referenced Rolex as a brand being worn specifically and I have to agree that it is not worn very often unless you go to the centers of money there: Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Munich. Here, you can see flashy status symbols like Rolex, Porsche, LV, Cartier, etc. much more frequently than anywhere else in the country.

I did Frankfurt, we got out the Subway in a bad part of town before taking a tram to a better part of town, I made sure my watch was covered, there are many poor souls living on the streets asking for help. One lost soul was on the pavement either dead or sleeping as everyone walked past going about thier business, they couldn't care less as two burly cops were standing just meters away at the entrance to the train station as if it was nothing. I saw some heartbreaking homeless scenes in Frankfurt and I did not feel safe wearing my watch there in the city.

Outwith the city, it's a lovely country and there was no concern for wearing my watch, I wouldn't say it's a beautiful country (it's not Scotland) but it's brimming with good people with a community spirt and I believe it is a better place to live than the UK with a better standard of living.

I was stunned that they still smoke though. I didn't see anyone vaping at all.
