Exhibition models?

How long does an AD need to keep a watch in exhibition before they can sell it?

My local AD has had a Pepsi on display for 3 months now. I’ve enquired about it a number of times and they say it’s exhibition only. I thought Rolex allowed ADs to sell exhibition models after 1 month?

Saw a daytona move from the exhibit box to a new owner. I was picking up a blue face submariner. They must have got a new shipment in.

I hear they can sell them now. Boxes and papers have been delivered to ADs. ADs only need a certain amount of inventory on hand for display which can come from new deliveries. So away go all those exhibition models out to the general public. I actually bought one a few weeks back.

Some of it depends on if they are actual exhibition models or just pieces placed in the exhibition case. My AD showed me a lady’s DD awhile ago that was available for purchase. After seeing if I wanted it (my wife isn’t into watches like me), and a couple SA’s calling regular clients they put it in the exhibition case. They sold it a bit later but if someone came in they didn’t want to sell it to for any reason they could easily say “it’s an exhibition piece”.

They had a VTNR (on oyster) that was “exhibition only” that magically found a new owner after a very brief stint as an exhibition piece. I’m waiting on a BLNR or VTNR on jubilee so I wasn’t too bummed about not being offered it, but the exhibition rules seem very flexible in the AD’s favor when needed.

Exhibition models?

It’s a good question & there seems to be a lot of confusion on the subject.

I was of the understanding that AD’s had to keep a certain amount of SS, TT & PM pieces in stock at all times to allow potential customers the opportunity to see them in the flesh & try on etc.

What that exact quota of SS, TT & PM pieces is may vary from AD to AD dependant on their size & annual turnover of watches etc.

I was also under the impression that they could only sell a piece from exhibition if they received another one to replace it?

Some members report seeing the same watches in the display for months at a time - it could possibly be the same reference but a different physical watch that was sold & replaced as new stock arrived.

Whenever I have asked over the last couple of years I was always told that they were working models that would be sold once they received a replacement from Rolex.

I was told by my AD they need to get permission from Rolex to sell them and sometimes Rolex would even ask for them to be sent back. Makes sense that Rolex wouldn’t want the stores to be completely empty and want to at least let people try pieces on to turn them into future customers.

My AD said that they do eventually sell them, but I suspect as others have noted that they only do so when they have another to replace it.

I told him that I would take the blue Skydweller on Oyster, but I wanted a discount since it was "used".

Edit: After posting this, I realized that some people may not get my humor. I was joking about the discount.

Did you see, I said I just bought an Exhibition Model from my AD? YMMV with your AD.

Likely hundreds of others have enquired the same as you have

Are you sure it's the same Pepsi? Could they have gotten new ones in, sold the prior exhibition, etc?

I've wondered how it all works too. I will say the exhibition model program is so much better than completely empty cases, that was bleak. There was a period where I thought I'd really like the new Sub but couldn't find out any way to just try one on. So when exhibition models came out it was great as I was finally able to confirm my suspicions that I'd love the new 41mm Sub.

Got my 126610 about a month ago from an AD in the city I was living in last year. Definitely did wonder if it was an exhibition model when I got the call, not that it matters really. I had an appointment for pickup and when I arrived it was already un-stickered but it was also as mint as mint could possibly be and I have a crazy attention to detail. So who knows, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Either way, feel very fortunate to have finally gotten one and it has not dissapointed.

I had found an "exhibition" model that my wife loved. I told them that was the one I wanted and a few months later I got the call and was able to buy that exact watch. So, it was the exhibition model for a while, but then went on to be sold.

I guess that's just a part of their rotation.

Same situation at my AD. They have had the same exact models and configurations in the diplay for almost two years now. Unless they are constantly replacing the models with the exact same identical configuration of Datejusts, GMT-Master IIs, etc nothing has changed. I've never seen anything other than the exact same ten professional models withouth variation. My salesman who I work with and trust has told me the same and I believe him because you can see the stickers peeling off from people coming in asking to try things on.

They do appear to be working models because the Sky-Dweller I took a look at a year ago worked properly when I was handling it and none of the dials are set to 10:10.

The only thing that might be different now is the black dial Milgauss they had might be gone (I haven't been in in a few months).

My Silver 41mm OP was in the window. I got the call when they were switching the window display up.

Did they sell it to you, as used, as someone else told me, under those same circumstances, but charge full price? It seems we are hearing that some ADs can sell display models, after 3 months, in the case. My car dealer bought the display blue dial, DJ 41 with fluted bezel on Oyster. SA told him, it had to be sold as “used”, but he paid full price. Incidentally, It was my AD, but not my SA. I forgot to ask about the warranty, but perhaps it kicked in 90 days before he bought it, and that’s why it was considered used? I will ask him next time I visit the dealership.
