A devastating day. I'm sure many of you can relate.

A few years back, on a quiet night in Sacramento, I met Rainer. He had just left the grocery store, only to find me ogling his white Porsche Cayman S. 90 minutes of yacking later, we knew we had a lot in common. Most significantly, we shared a humbling admiration for our wives.

Rainer and his wife Susan were a big influence on us, particularly because my wife and I had just started our company, and they had recently sold theirs. Rainer's Porsche was only three months old, a 'retirement' reward for selling the company. He and his wife bought a piece of land on the ocean in northern California, and he rode his motorcycle there each weekend to build their get-away home. He also surprised Susan by buying the craftsman house next door to theirs, so that she would have a place to make and display her art.

In March of this year, their beloved Golden Retriever died. They were devastated. But their attention was redirected only a couple weeks later, when they found out Susan had leukemia. Sadly, a few weeks ago, not yet 50 years old, Susan died.

It's so upsetting I can't believe it. Rainer had requested privacy, so I only found out today. I'm just sitting here in a daze. And I feel so badly for him, as he is alone now.

I hope this is meaningful to you in some way. I'm sure many of you can relate. Hug those loved ones!

Susan

Oh Howard, this is such a sad story. They sound like a special couple and it's heartbreaking to imagine how Rainer must feel. I am so so sorry to hear of Susan's passing.

If anything, this again reminds us not to take anything or anyone for granted.

Thank you for the lesson and please accept my condolences for your loss.

Howard - I'm so sorry to hear. I had a close friend pass suddenly the week before last and it was crushing (not to hijack... I just understand how you feel).

My thoughts are with you, friend.

Really sorry to hear that Howard. It's a shame, she was so young...Hearing things like this, makes you really appreciate what you have.

No hijack at all, Jen. My intention and hope is that others feel free to share their similar experiences. It can be so overwhelming to lose people you love.

Thank you all for the very thoughtful comments. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It means a lot!

News like this is often surprising due to the age of the person, and sometimes due also to the suddenness of the tragedy. It is a reminder of the fragility of life, and that tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. Sorry to hear this news, Howard.

I'm sorry for your lost and I can relate a little. This past May, my wife's sister's husband had a stroke and died at the age of 43. You never really know when death will strike.

I can't add much to the previous posts, Howard, except to add my deepest sympathies to you and your friend. Her loss must be devestating to both of you. Stay close to your friend and hopefully you will draw strength from each other; so that the healing will follow.
