I got married wearing it, made partner wearing it and buried my dad and all my grandparents wearing it. Was wearing it when both my sons were born and at all their graduations and first days of everything.

I recently bought my son the same OP36 in blue that you got your son for his college grad. and he is making his memories now.
OP, I think that is a superb gift, and your son will appreciate it forever because he appreciates watches. Your story is different than those other posts here where someone buys (or contemplates buying) a Rolex for a kid and they are not sure whether or not the kid will like it or appreciate it because the kid favors Apple Watches and have never shown interest in this hobby. Those wayward posters are eviscerated quickly and for good reason. Your son understands what you have gifted him which is completely different.

Reason I quote the above post is because that ^^^^ is exactly the sentiment that your son will feel for the next XX years. "My dad gave me this watch when I was 18 and allow me list the things that I have done in my life wearing it. It always makes me think of him."

I think it is a completely different situation when the recipient doesn't care about watches. You did something very special and I commend you for it.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and sentiments.
Now I have to work out what to get my daughter when she turns 18! She is also into watches, but loves her watches to be teeny tiny. She loves the rectangle and square style pieces, so I am thinking Cartier, but I have a few years yet before I need to cross that bridge

And for those that asked I was wearing the Swatch x Blancpain Antarctic. I specifically wanted to wear a cheap watch, because I wanted it to be all about my son. I didn’t want it to be like “yeah…it’s nice you have that watch, but I have this even more impressive more expensive watch”. I am sure he wouldn’t have thought that…but it was his special day and I wanted it to be that way.
That evening we took the kids for dinner in London and then to see the Back To The Future musical, which was aaaaaamazing!

Truly a great gesture from his dad. And the love he has for his son. I’m sure his son is very appreciative. I’m sure most of us would love our dad to buy us a Rolex for a 18th birthday.

I personally would have my son work, and save. When he’s ready to purchase his Rolex, I’ll help him if he needs it.

I guess I’m old school.

Is there a possibility of being adopted too... It's a lovely watch.

This is a perfect gift and one your son will surely cherish forever. The beautiful thing about watches is that they connect you to a moment and connect the moment to all time. Happy Birthday to your son.

Lovely. Happy birthday to your son. It’s a great watch, but even better is how excited you are for him. If that makes any sense? Enjoy the special occasion.
