I liked the way he calculated the amount of watches that could be sold in each store around the world given all the different factors, wether through AD or boutique. He seemed to touch upon all of questions people ask on here, current supply, future supply scenarios, interesting the figure of around 3 watches sold a day in AD’s, at least from what I remember. Fun and interesting video.
One conclusion he made (which he supported with good evidence and analysis), is that Rolex won’t go to its own distribution network for a long time. Bucherer has 100 or so stores, and Rolex needs between 1000-2000 stores to sell the volume they produce. Nothing like Patek or AP when you’re producing 20x the volume to sell. |

One of the thoughts I had is, could it be possible not selling through brick and mortar stores at all just sell online, and have showcases in stores around the world, and sell through an actual waiting list, a bit like the way Amazon and every other online retailer does but obviously without a waiting list. Not the nicest buying experience and a lot of jobs would be at risk I’m guessing if a model like that was implemented.

Call me old fashioned but I hope Rolex never sells online. To me part of any luxury product is seeing it, trying it on, making sure it’s the right thing for you to spend $$$ on.

I think his math is too simplistic. Currently, not all dealers are equal and they won’t be equal in his predicted future. At least in the US, the AD owned Rolex only Boutiques are the Tier 1 stores and they move a lot more than 600 watches in a year.

It would be possible to have the exact same buying and customer experience as people do in store now combined with an online buying waiting list, for example the showcases would would be freely available to walk and try on all the different models, then people go on an automated waiting list, the watch could be sent to people’s preferred store to collect making the shopping and buying experience more or less the same as it is now. Just a thought.
