The only difference back then sure Rolex watches were easier to buy from ADs, but although it was a huge expense for my Father he most certainly did not baby it .I own my Fathers 6263 now still ticking and keeping time but its one watch I would never ever sell at any price.

I don’t use a iPhone case or screen protector. A $1200 iPhone is a disposable item for me. I don’t put scratch guards on my watchs. But 15k plus watches are part of my collection and not considered disposable.

The younger collectors simply have a different perspective than you do. To them a Rolex is not a tool watch. Why do classic car collectors owners baby their cars? Same thing.

Screen protectors generally are not needed but not putting a case on it is just crazy because one drop can and often will screw a phone that would otherwise be protected by a case. if you see a $1200 iphone as 'disposable' then you don't appear to care so much about either your wallet or the environment.

If you truly see a $1200 iphone as 'disposable' then you would appear to have a rather relaxed attitude to both your wallet and the negative environment impact.

I don't know why OP even bothers to post here if he has such derision for everyone and everything on the forum...just an old man yelling at clouds who can't even use basic punctuation correctly. Week in, week out it's nothing but the same snotty, elitist posts. "Back in my day..." Cool story gramps, nobody cares.

A case makes the phone too big. So I don’t use one. I am careful with my stuff. But $1200 for a phone is really not a consideration for me in terms of cost. I am not sure about the environmental aspects. I give my phone every year to my assistant and she gets me a new one. I am not sure what she does with it.

A bit naff looking but what Super protection, for already one of the toughest made watches on this planet today.Made from 4mm super super soft high density COSC tested, 100% Superlative Officially Certified polypropylene Neoprene, and no I will not tell you where you can buy them so don't ask.A Rolex is for life and wearing and don't need any sort of pampering except soap and water and routine service.

Some protection, but not full protection. One would still need to go indoors to look at the time, as opening the flap outdoors still risks damage from UV rays.

I wear my watches most of the time, but I take them off when doing labor with heavy sharp tools or when using machinery which has heavy vibration.

Yes, I'm like that too, I always wear my cheapest and disposable watch if I can get my hands dirty Fortunately, there are plastic protective films for everything else! Since then, my wrists have always been clean, because I only wear my watches over them! How can they even touch my wrist? With a pure metal or glass on their back? Yikes, disgusting! What medieval barbarism!

I got some cement on the meteorite dial of my white gold gmt master 2. I must of had the case back come off and movement not completely screwed down due to the vibrations from the sledge hammer. Anyways. Cement is basically the same color as meteorite so I’m good to go. I didn’t even bother to get it serviced. I just super glued the Caseback back on after I found it inside a manhole. Because I am too busy to screw it down and I don’t have a case back tool. We were doing maintenance on some steam pipes in midtown.

Spot on Peter. I find myself shaking my head at these types. When I see their OCD going into overdrive, I post one of my favorite wrist shots to push them over the edge.

Those threads are also why I spend most of my watch time online at a smaller forum and am trying to revive another forum that’s basically a ghost town right now.

I've heard warnings about wearing a Rolex during a total eclipse. Seems it might mess up the Rolex corona or something.

Do that with a full gold Rolex and I might be suitable impressed with the nonchalance. With the explorer I would wear that sharpening my lawn mower. that’s not enough to trigger my ocd.

Hilarious, another fun read.

Crazy how bombproof tanky these watches are.

33 year old GMT Master just back from service, been doing the "Superlative Chronometer" thing lock step with the atomic clock - +2/-2 per day, most times right on the mark.

Flamingos in Aruba whilst swimming on the other hand....Danger!!!

This Day-Date almost dissolved off my wrist due to swimming in the Caribbean Sea before I could get it to a freshwater bath...true story!!

Keeping it more serious, Rolex are jewelry. They sell them at jewelers for the most part.

If you want a tool watch there are plenty out there, sporting goods stores sell them. Amazon sells them.

Grandpa? REALLY? Some claim that Rolex is so tough, It's a tool watch and all that. But others will beat the daylights out of a $100 Seiko 5 because it's not a Rolex. But the Seiko will take on about anything you could throw at it. Is Seiko tougher than Rolex. Maybe even a Hamilton or Tissot? No. The difference is the cost and bling.

I can understand "trying " to keep a valuable watch pristine. But if you wear it it is inevitable that it WILL get damaged. But just remember that us old grandpa's were wearing them like a Sekio a long time ago and they held up. That's why the younger crowd can call them tough because us old folks proved it. We gave them that honored title. I still were mine in the harshest conditions and with all the modern materials and engineering they are even tougher. To each his own. But there is no reason to state snide remarks to folks that have forgotten more about what it REALLY means to wear a Rolex than some will ever know. You just might want to pay attention once in awhile. You might learn something and be proud of your watch for a different reason. Then try to wear your watch instead of your watch owning you. There is a difference and a sense of pleasure some are surely missing. So sad.

Those times have passed though. I think a Seiko 5 is a great choice.

You can’t buy a Rolex on a military base anymore.

Check out what this former CIA officer says about tool watches for a modern person, it ain’t Rolex.
