Call from AD - Do you always buy?

I received a call from my local AD over the weekend who left me a message saying that he has a TT Sub black dial. I missed his call and called him back in a matter of minutes and he let me know the watch was already sold. I currently own this watch and it got me thinking. when my AD (who rarely gets watches in, so he says) calls, does it hurt your chances for future pieces if you decline - within reason?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Depends on the AD and the reason.

I think it depends completely on the AD. I’ve declined four or five watches over several years, and I’ve still later been offered the watches in which I’ve expressed interest — the root beer GMT, the Starbucks, the blue John Mayer Daytona, most recently the meteorite GMT, etc. But I have an awesome AD. I’ve heard lots of other much different and bad stories about others’ experiences with their ADs.

Yes. But usually calls are only for what’s on my list.

If it wasn’t on your list and your AD is a reasonable person, it can’t hurt you to decline.

I’ve declined watches but never a watch that was on my list.

I was offered some full PM pieces that I did not request and declined them. My AD seems very reasonable so I don’t think it’ll prevent me from getting a watch that I do want. Although I also imagine that picking up the full PM piece may have moved me up to higher standing.

I get the occasional call for pieces I have zero interest in buying. I politely decline. They know exactly what I want but they try anyway …

Thanks -
I haven't had much interaction with this AD and quite frankly have never purchased from him so didnt know if turning down his first offer would be the kiss of death?

My Ad has only called once for something that wasn't on my "list" but she knows my taste and I couldn't say no once it was on the wrist LOL

that said if it wasn't something I wanted I wouldn't buy just to build history

You would have turned it down, because you already own it, right? That shouldn’t have hurt your chances, at getting future calls. I can see an AD not taking a client seriously, if he calls, with a watch that a client requested, and client subsequently declines the watch. But, If he calls and offers a watch a client did not ask for, no harm, no foul, as far as I’m concerned.

I've never asked for something I didn't want and I've never been cold called for a non-requested piece, but I'm hardly a whale. I figure if I do start getting such calls, it's a true indication that "IT'S HAPPENING."

I’ve gotten calls and called back within an hour or two to discuss. I’ve never had to deal with a call and then it was sold within minutes.

No point buying something if it’s not on your list or a piece you don’t love

Depends on what's being offered. If my AD is offering something I don't want, I don't buy it. I'm not waiting for anything, although we still visit and buy other things. I was offered a BLNR which I declined. My BLRO came through 15 months later. My wife was offered an OP Grape, which she immediately pounced on. It can happen, but it doesn't happen much to me and I never get a phone call or txt, it's always in person.

You already own this watch, but you're worried about your AD not selling you future watches if you decline a second identical one? Did you purchase the watch you own from this AD?

A better question is should you hold this against the AD for calling you and then selling a watch that you already own to someone else. You might want to evaluate how you look at this. As said before, AD's are running a business and you are not their friend.

I'm declining regularly now. Can only have so many watches and the market has shifted. No one should feel like they have to buy anything, especially if it's not one you've expressed interest in.

My Rolex AD never contacts me unless there’s something I specifically request. In that case, I’m a buyer.

You called back in a few minutes and he already told you the watch was sold? It seems the AD should give you at least 20-30 minutes to receive a call back before he called someone else.
I don’t think it will hurt your chances for another watch. I have turned down a watch and the dealer called me back when he had one I was wanting. I wouldn’t worry about it.

You’re right that ADs are in business to sell as much of everything they have as possible … to make money. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But the idea that AD-customer relationships are nonsense is nonsense. Relationships in business — and life — are everything. And wise business people will spend a lot of time paying attention to them and nurturing them if they want to succeed, as will customers if they want to be able to buy what they’re looking for. It may not be a “privilege” to pay someone thousands of dollars for a watch. But, if that person is the only one or one of a just a few from whom you can buy the watch you want, you’d better work on your relationship with him/her. That’s not nonsense; it’s common sense.

The current problem is just that, "anyone with the cash" cannot just walk in and buy what they want. Each AD has their own specific allocation procedures, and the perception is, rightly or wrongly, that it unfairly favors a few over the many.
